I am using the VSL Syzd Cello merged basic that has Portamento as an ornament.
I was told by VSL forum that I need to over lap notes so the instrument playback this ornament.
So far, I have not been able to overlap the needed notes so it triggers the Portamento sample in the VSP. I can only get an overlap that is more than what I need and it also modifies the score duration of the notes, which I don’t need/want.
What am I missing? I know that with the solo strings from VI series, I could trigger the portamento without having to do any manual overlapping.
In any case, I would appreciate any help, suggestions in this matter.
Thank you.
I’m not sure why you need the overlap to trigger portamento, but … the VSL provided Expression Maps are configured for portamento. The playing technique must be attached to the target note. In the attached file I made a less obtrusive port. PT (mapped to the same playback technique) and I also duplicated/edited the portamento base technique so that portamento also works with slurs…

To edit the played durations of notes without affecting the printed notation, use the Played Durations mode in the piano roll in the Key Editor.
Hi,
I was able to overlap notes with what Daniel suggested. Thank you for that. It still didn’t fix the playback issue.
I’ve looked at the attachment Fratveno put out. It does the portamentos as expected. I also noticed that the VSL setting is for the Cello 1 basic VelXF-sus, not the Cello Sordino basic velocity, which is what I’m using due to VSL stating their EM’s only work for the basic Velocity versions of the instrument. If I’m misunderstanding anything, please enlighten me.
In any case, my Cello still doesn’t respond to portamento markings in the score.
Any other ideas?
I’m checking more with VSL, as well.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
My file also works with the Basic Velocity - just dbl click it to replace it. Now, does the sordino actually have portamento? (I don’t own it) - Can you upload a screenshot of the Synchron player when sordino is loaded? If portamento exists it should be simple enough to modify the expression map in order to make it work…
Well, you posted the senza sordino interface… what if you click Con Sordino in the leftmost column? in any case you’ll need to modify the Expression Map provided by VSL. I’ll have another look at it tomorrow…
OK, you are correct. In this section of the piece the Cello is “sense sordino” Both options have the portamento option.
I will look closer to your sample.
Thank you
The clearest way forward with portamento in VSL is to create your own playing technique and use this. The playback of Dorico’s port. In the score should then be disabled in the Properties. This way it will certainly work.
If I remember correctly, VSL’s own EM implementation wasn’t very satisfactory when I checked it out but they may have revised it since.
My guess is that both the con sord and senza sord articulation maps are identical, so using the VSL provided Expression Map should work. (It even includes the right key switch to switch to con sord, but not back ) As long as you don’t use the Dorico gliss line (or forget to disable playback for it in the properties) just add a portamento playing technique to the note where the portamento should END. Don’t use slurs. (Slurs work in the file I attached above because I modified the Xmap)
Exactly—- the crucial thing is to ensure that playback for the Dorico gliss/port line is disabled. You don’t need to use it but it does look better in the score in my view. You then of course hide your own p.t. as to display both is not very elegant.
