Overloading disk streaming and Ext. SSD crash/disconnect

When loading a specific project, as soon as it has loaded, I get a sudden sustained disk overload in the performance meter, and Cubase becomes unresponsive. Then I get a notification from MacOS that I did not eject the external SSD properly.

This had me concerned about the health of the SSD, but when disconnecting and reconnecting it, everything was working fine. It was only this one project that is effected.

I tested this a couple of times to make sure that it wasn’t a one off, and with this specific project, this was happening 100% of the time. No issues at all with other projects.

Something in this project is causing the external SSD to overload, crash the external SSD, and crash Cubase. Pretty concerning.

Sounds like you may have a digital loop, though I’m not sure how you are going to troubleshoot it if Cubase is crashing when opening the project. If your disk activity goes full scale when opening the project, SOMETHING is maxing out the disk buffers.

Debugging might be painful! I think perhaps I would start with opening Cubase in Safe Mode and bypassing loading of the VSTs to see if it at least comes up without crashing.
