Page layout/music frame request

As we know, Dorico doesn’t really attempt to do pagination, leaving it to us. Sometimes, we need to force extra staves onto a page so that a player has time and space to turn pages. When we have to cram a page perhaps a bit fuller than we’d like, I’d like to be able to put the top system where I want it and the bottom system where I want that, select a “respace systems” tool and have Dorico try its best to fit the staves onto the page between the top and bottom system without allowing collisions. As it is now, I have to bump systems north or south manually, and it’s kind of tedious, especially on string parts where good spots for page turns can be few and far between.

Make into Frame is the simplest method and it avoids manually moving systems.
(But, yes, getting decent page turns is always a challenge)

Hi @JustinM, it would be interesting to see a Layout (Dorico project) where you need something like you describe, to see what the best strategy would be, using the current functionalities (and avoiding the need of manual staff/system positioning), if you are willing to upload an example Dorico file. Thank you.

It’s true that you can’t currently position the top and bottom systems above/below the page margins. But on a given page, Dorico is always “trying its best” to fit the staves in between the page margins, even if the page is more full than it should be. But the more that the frame fullness gets over 100%, the less satisfactory the results are likely to be.
