If I convert a score set up on 8.5X11 size paper and then convert the page size to Concert Size (9X12) will it likely be necessary for me to go in and change Space Size, Note Spacing, etc. on the larger score or will Dorico create an exact formatting automatically in the new score?
Also, can I set things up such that the score layout will be 9X12 but the parts layout will be 8.5X11?
If you only change the page size, Dorico will rerender your music according to the new given space on your paper. So things like “where does music break to the next system?” or “how many systems fit on a page?” will probably change. If you don’t want that for whatever reason, maybe it’s better to print it to PDF using the current page size and then print it from this PDF with some scaling to achieve the new size.
Yes, each layout can have its own page size. It is totally common to have a score on a different page size than parts.
Estigy,
Thank you very much for the extremely rapid response. This is great news and another reason I am growing to appreciate this program more each day. In Finale, when I changed the page size I would have to go in a basically re-scale everything.
Thanks again.
Gary
P.S. - I assume I would set up the different page sizes for score and parts that I do that in Layout Options and select just the score from the layouts list and then change just that layout to 9X12?
benwiggy,
Wait. What? You mean I can have multiple layouts of the same score without having to do a “Save As” and create a whole new score? Would this mean that when I make a change to one size (letter) it would also make the same change in the larger layout automatically? This would be terrific if I can figure out how to do it.
Thanks, my friend.

Layouts are just containers for players. You can have layouts that combine a subset of players (like “all percussions” maybe), and you can even have layouts that include the very same set of players as other layouts. (Think of a score in portrait orientation and a score in landscape orientation.)
The only “big” distinction is “layouts for parts” vs. “layouts for scores”, but this is only a very general distinction so we can have some very general global configurations between those types. (Part layouts commonly are set to have multimeasure bars while scors will not have them, but all of this can be changed if you want.)
This is the beauty of Dorico. The separation of “notation” from “layout” means that you can have a full score on US Letter, a full score on A4; a vocal score with a piano reduction; and anything else you can think of — all in the same document!
Everything in the Layout Options affects only that one Layout. So you can have different page sizes, different margins, different staff size, etc, etc., etc.
Dear Estigy and benwiggy,
Thank you both for your advice on Layouts. I will work on figuring out setting up a new 9X12 Layout for my score which I assume I do in Layout Options. I probably first need to figure out how to establish an additional Layout for my score and then begin making sure both layouts look like I want them to.
I’ll try to do that on my own for now. You have both been very helpful as usual.
Gary
I might need some further advice on this process as you will see in the screen shots. The first is my original score in letter size. I then set up a new score layout in Layout Options and the selected that new layout and then went to Print Mode to see how things looked. The second screen shot is the new layout of the score which I changed the page size to Concert. As you can see the new layout is not satisfactory at all. I must be doing something wrong.
Thanks
You will continue to get excellent advice from Ben and Estigy, @ghfagan51, but if you care to “kick back” and watch some videos, I did this quick search (search phrase: “layout page size”) in Dorico’s YouTube channel:
The actual document size adjusting is not done in Print mode.
The new layout is first created in the Setup Mode, not directly in the Layout Options.
You can select and view your newly created layout in Write mode when you click the ”Full Score” dropdown menu (to the right of the Print mode button).
After doing that, go to Layout Options, make sure that your newly created Concert paper size layout is selected on the right hand side and change the Page Setup → Space Size → Rastral size into something more fitting, which will make the music staves properly sized for the music to fit the new paper size.
lafin,
I went to Print Mode and Opened the new Score Layout and then went to layout options and changed the page size to Concert and hit “Apply” but it made no difference in the appearance of that new Score Layout.
O.K. I set up my new Score Layout in Setup Mode and then went into Write Mode and selected the New score layout and it does show in Layout Options that this new score is Concert Size. I guess I was not aware that I needed to go into that new score in Write Mode and change the Space Size (Rastral Size) and the Note Spacing parameters and such. That must be the step I am missing.
Thanks.
You may not need to adjust Note Spacing parameters separately, try at first just selecting a larger Rastral size for music and let Dorico handle the Space size automatically…
hannuala,
Hmm. So if I am going from Letter size to a new Layout which is Concert size (larger) it seems to me I would need to make the Space (Rastral) size and the Note Spacing larger to fit the larger size page, not smaller.
Well, I am getting closer. @ screen shots here now. The first is the original Letter Size score and the second is the new Layout in Concert size. I did go in and change the Rastral size as hannuala suggested which makes the new score closer to the original. But notice that certain things did not carry over to the new score layout such as the Title, “Conductor Score” in upper left. It also changed the bracketing in the Perc. parts. I guess these are things I need to reset in the new Layout and are not transfered over from the original Layout, right?
Thanks to all.
Lillie,
Thanks for the response. If I duplicate my original score and then make changes to actual notes and such then I assume those changes would not transfer over to the new score whereas if I simply set up a new Layout in Concert size then any change I make to the original score, such as notes, those changes would be transfered over to the new layout. Is that right?
