Hello, I am attempting to customize the bar numbers in my score using Paragraph Styles > Bar Numbers (Score). When I changed the size, font, etc. using the buttons, the changes appeared on the bar numbers on my screen (see attached screenshot). But when I click on the selections for Border (i.e., “Border,” “Border Thickness,” “Border Style”), nothing happens – no border on my bar numbers (you can see the bar numbers on the screenshot do not have borders). Can someone suggest what I’m doing wrong or how to make this happen? I’m looking to have bar numbers with a rectangle around them. Thanks!
You have to tick the box “border”
You can also set an enclosure under Library→Layout Options→Bar Numbers. And with more options under Library→Engraving Options→Bar Numbers.

Yes, that did it, thanks. I went to Library→Layout Options→Bar Numbers and Enclosures was set to “None.” I changed it to “Rectangle” and the rectangles around my bar numbers appeared. Thanks for the solution. I have to say, though, that it’s a bit confusing having competing (and overlapping) options in two places. It seems that I need to set some options in Library→Layout Options→Bar Numbers and other options in Library→Paragraph Styles→Bar Numbers (Score), and that both need to be viewed and compared to ensure I’m getting the results I want. I’m just suggesting that this could possibly be simplified / unified. But thanks for your helpful response.
You could use just the paragraph style. You forgot to tick the box. It’s rather new with bar numbers as a paragraph style, so I guess the other way is kept for compatibility.
To add on to @jesele’s answer, turning on the toggle next to Border in the paragraph style tells Dorico that you want to override the parent style definition. But then the checkbox determines whether or not the border appears. You activated the toggle but left the checkbox unticked, so no border was added by the paragraph style.
OK, thanks, that’s helpful, but it’s still confusing. I’m not clear on why I would have to both turn on the toggle AND tick the checkbox. There’s no “checkbox” associated with any other option (Placement, Alignment, etc.), so obviously there must be something different about the Border option. I get that if I don’t tick the box, I don’t get a Border, but I definitely don’t understand why I would click on the toggle for Border and then not want a Border – under what circumstances would clicking the toggle and NOT ticking the box be useful? In other words, in every case where I want a Border, I would need to click the toggle AND tick the checkbox to get the Border, so why are 2 actions needed? Clearly, there’s something I’m not getting. Thank you.
If the parent style has a border, but you want this style not to have a border, you’d turn the toggle on to indicate an override, but leave the checkbox unticked, to indicate no border.
This paradigm is used in many places in Dorico.
