One of my violins is scordatura. I need to present the score in suono reale. And the part transposed to be gripped as a regular violin.
The transposition must be done manually, as its tuned with other intervals between the strings, and cant be done in one click. So it will be a different version.
In finale i’d make a copy and work it out in a different document. Is this the way to do it in dorico too? wonder if it’s convenient to keep them connected in the project.
A quick thought (but I do not know whether it is possible):
If you can assign the transposing string to its own MIDI Channel, then it might be possible to give that string its own transposition.
Make two players : Violin (Score) and Violin (Scordatura)
In your Full Score layout, only include the Violin (Score).
Once you have completed your score, create a new layout that includes only the two violins.
Copy the Score violin to the Scordatura violin (right-click>paste special>duplicate to staff below).
Now work through the Scordatura part transposing for each string. I don’t know a quick way to do this, but there are useful tools.
I would first set the notes on each string to a different voice. (using shift-V to create new voices and V to move notes from voice to voice) (EDIT: Turn on Show Voice Colours to make this clearer!)
Then you could filter for each voice and apply the relevant transposition (eg. shift-I T M2 to move the notation up a major 2nd)
Then return everything to the original voice(s).
You should now have the Score (at pitch) and a Violin (Scordatura) Part Layout.
I would like to add to Janus’s excellent description: the second half (using and distributing to different voices) is necessary if you want the playback to work for your scordatura violin. Alternatively, you could just mute this instrument in the Mixer and let the other violin do the playback.
For the process of organising the scordatura part, you might utilise the “Filter by pitch” for a start: Select All, Filter by Pitch, move the filtered notes with Alt-Up/Down Arrows, and at the end, do the individual override to this editing.
That is not 100% foolproof, because the same MIDI pitch may be played on different strings, but would need to be notated differently on the stave.
(Interestingly Dorico handles this perfectly well for TAB notation with different string tunings! I guess a system to apply this to a scordatura stave may be a wish too far?)
Once the track is muted, one can fool around with it
