Paste into free meter bar?

I love that you do not need to have a time signature to input music.
but I am having little luck pasting free meter bars into existing scores.
I have done some sketches for a cadenza, and want to paste into another file, but even though I have created an “X” bar, it flows into the existing measures.
Anyone have a suggestion? (Hopefully not selecting bar lines and hiding them, or having to count the number of beats in the cadenza…)
Thanks!

Experimenting here… I find I can paste the free meter bar, but only at the end of a flow.
Perhaps there is a more elegant way of doing this?

If there’s a time signature or explicit barline already in the flow you’re pasting into, then that acts as a “stopper” because Dorico will preserve its position.

You could try pasting with Insert mode active, and set to the Global Adjustment of Current Bar scope - I can’t remember off the top of my head how that works with pasting, but the principle of that scope is to expand the bar you’re in.

OK, here is a solution: Paste the cadenza bar (created in a free meter measure) into some random (metered) bar and see how many measures it needs.
Then add that number of measures in the score at the point you need the passage, paste the free bar in, then mark all the extra measures and convert them to one free meter bar.
A little bit fiddly but it works (although you probably will need to clean up the last bar somehow.

Will check that out… I had tried in Insert mode but that did not help. The Global adjustment thingy is new to me but I am willing to learn.
Thanks

Does not seem to work in my situation.
But I did find a workaround for this evening.

Lillie’s solution works perfectly for me. Once you have pasted your cadenza, you will need to create the open meter at the start and recreate your normal meter at the end (which you can hide).

Yes, it is fine, but I was worried that I would have to manually count the number of beats, so that is how I came up with pasting into some blank bars and just counting those. (The cadenza has over 300 notes)

No need to count the notes. With global insert mode Dorico will create all the space that it needs (even if, temporarily, your music may look all messed up - don’t panic!). Just find the last note of your cadenza and add a barline together with the old meter and order will be restored.
