Pattern Editor no option to re order Step Lanes

Just looking for verification that currently the step lanes in the Pattern Editor can not be re ordered. I added a new lane, but then I wanted to drag it to the top of the list but see no option to do this…

I was just wondering the same thing. If it is in fact possible to move step lanes up and down in the list, it sure isn’t obvious how to do this.

If there really is no way to reorder step lanes in the new Pattern Event sequencer, that would not only be unbelievably stupid but moreover completely insane. What possible reason could there be to limit the functionality like this?

If anything, there should be options to sort the step lane list by the assigned note number, the step lane name (both alphabetically and in reverse alphabetical order,) whether there is event or controller data contained within the lane, etc.

Come on Steinberg. This is not rocket science.

thanks for your input Budawg
I am trying to stay positive but there are so many little things that keep adding up in Cubase 14, as well intentioned as it is, there seem to be just too many things that appear to be not ready for prime time so to speak, its not sitting well with me that we are all beta testers to whats becoming a long list of incomplete functionality…

This is probably a topic for a separate thread. But what new features would you say are half-baked? I would honestly like to know as I just started using Cubase 14 Pro (as a long time Cubase user going back to the 90s).

One thing I just came across is the seeming inability to move lanes up and down in the new Pattern Event sequencer. That is a mind-boggling oversight if it is in fact the current behavior. Stuff like that needs to obviously be improved. That’s not a subjective matter where people can have different opinions regarding the desired behavior. Things like that should get fixed first, IMO.

hi Budawg
everyday as I work my way through the new selection of Cubase 14 features I am hit with another non functioning aspect of the set, starting with the Score Editor, every other area in Cubase you rt click and get your tools, this has been a part of the Cubase anatomy as long as I can remember, and in fact the main spokes person for Steinberg has been heard to comment “if we removed the tools a lot of people would be mad at us” and yet you go to the new score editor and guess what, no tools. With the new Modulators there is no option to automate the modulation depth slider, that is well discussed in other threads, and I could go on, but the point is, for every new thing that has been added there is a growing pattern of incompleteness in terms of testing and functionality, I am an avid supporter of Steinberg products but that being said, its starting to look like the king has no clothes,

I would like to reassure you that all of these issues will be addressed in a 0.5 release. But that never seems to happen. By then Steinberg has usually moved on to new features that they can charge for. Steinberg seem to be operating under the assumption that no one is willing to pay for bug fixes and workflow improvements unless they are paired with a marquee new feature. The Marketing and Sales folks at Steinberg probably know what they are doing and understand all-too-well what most users are and are not willing to pay for.

As they say, “It is what it is.”

all good points Budawg
for me in the past, especially through the last few versions I have been impressed with the overall functionality improvements, this is the first time I have felt the improvement ideas were foundationally good, but functionally it feels like they were pushed out the door before they were ready. Which feels unusual to me and signals a possible change in either the cooperate management or direction. I hope I am wrong, and this will not be the new pattern going forward.

I’m the last person to make excuses for Steinberg. But Cubase 14 does seem like a more ambitious release than 11, 12, or 13 to me. So perhaps Steinberg bit off more than they could chew. Still, I would rather see them swinging for the fences than playing it safe (to mix metaphors).

yes Budawg
it all depends on your point of view, for me personally I’m feeling a bit like a character in a commercial I once saw where the service provider shaved half of his dogs hair and the main line was, “you wouldn’t be happy with half a job”, that’s how I’m starting to feel about Cubase 14, maybe not half a job, that’s a bit extreme , because there are some great ideas, but I feel it just fell a little short in the execution of it all…
