Pattern Editor: Offset Variance

The Pattern Editor already has a Velocity Variance parameter and a Probability lane, both of which go a long way toward making patterns feel less mechanical. I’d love to see the same treatment applied to Offset.

The idea is simple: an Offset Variance control that defines how much random deviation is applied to the offset value of each step. For example, if a step’s offset is set to 0 with a variance of 10 ticks, that step would land anywhere within ±10 ticks of the beat. If the offset is set to +15 with a variance of 10, the step would land anywhere between +5 and +25 ticks ahead of the beat.

In terms of implementation, I could see this working either as a dedicated Offset Variance parameter lane (consistent with how Velocity Variance is handled), or as a modifier-based interaction on the existing Offset lane — for example, holding ⌥ while dragging a cell to expand its variance range visually. The latter would keep the interface clean and avoid adding another lane, though either approach would be welcome.

This would go a long way toward making the Pattern Editor capable of producing performances that feel genuinely human rather than mechanically grid-locked.

You can pretty much do all of this right now using the Track’s MIDI Modifiers & MIDI Inserts.

For what it’s worth these aren’t confined to the Pattern Editor, they were added to the Key & Drum editors too.

@raino Thanks for the reply!

Yes, you can but it a few clicks away and if you want to do it to individual parts within a kit you would have to split the kit out using dissolve to part (I would think). Having it built into the Pattern Editor seems like it would be a lot faster and more intuitive.
