lol I wasn’t messing around. It’s based on the old hardware sequencer. Reaper has JS: Step Sequencer Megababy which is similar.
For example use an instance of retrologue and make a sort of analogue pluck sound. Trigger it with the step sequencer (add delay too for added flavour) You can add other instaces and use even and odd step numbers and you will start to hear the those old rhythms from the music I mentioned.
Some plugins have one built it. U-HE for example has step sequencer on a few of their synths to give this effect to the patches.
Not sure on how you trigger your instance of retrologue with the pattern sequencer as the lanes triggers the drums or samples from the Drum machine ? But it sounds very cool
Even there it can be clunky. For example, I find the Lane for Velocity & similar settings to be too short making it difficult to make smaller adjustments. Not to mention the absence of the Scaling & Ramping Tools found in the MIDI Editors.
One workflow I’ve been playing with is to use it to quickly sketch out the basics of a groove. Then convert the Pattern into a MIDI Part and fine tune stuff there. So far I’ve found this pretty useful.
