Pattern Sequencer poll

Hey guys,

Just curious, do you often use the Pattern Sequencer ? If so, in what situation ?

I guess this is more appropriate for EDM genre although it could work for scoring drums too.

The Pattern Sequencer video made by Dom Sigalas is quite nice but his enthusiasm makes everything looking like a dream.

I tried a bit but I wonder if it will take me more time learning on how to use it properly than doing my drums parts in the old fashion way.

My guess is that you can benefit from it by getting fast or surprising results but would you change the way you work for this ?

What do you think of it?

Any user feedback?

Handy to get a Tangerine Dream/Berlin School sequence vibe going.

lol I wasn’t messing around. It’s based on the old hardware sequencer. Reaper has JS: Step Sequencer Megababy which is similar.

For example use an instance of retrologue and make a sort of analogue pluck sound. Trigger it with the step sequencer (add delay too for added flavour) You can add other instaces and use even and odd step numbers and you will start to hear the those old rhythms from the music I mentioned.

Some plugins have one built it. U-HE for example has step sequencer on a few of their synths to give this effect to the patches.

Not sure on how you trigger your instance of retrologue with the pattern sequencer as the lanes triggers the drums or samples from the Drum machine ? But it sounds very cool

I’ve found it quick & easy to use as a more groove oriented click Track. Especially when you use different pattern variants for verse, chorus, etc.

That’s wrong, you can use them on any MIDI based Track.

Hold on you meant the midi pattern thing that’s used with the drum machine didn’t you? :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth: I’ll leave the building now… sorry

This? Yeah is sucks for anyting other than drums at the moment.

Yeah, that’s what I thought

They might add to it in 15 to use with other insturments better.

Even there it can be clunky. For example, I find the Lane for Velocity & similar settings to be too short making it difficult to make smaller adjustments. Not to mention the absence of the Scaling & Ramping Tools found in the MIDI Editors.

One workflow I’ve been playing with is to use it to quickly sketch out the basics of a groove. Then convert the Pattern into a MIDI Part and fine tune stuff there. So far I’ve found this pretty useful.

I like you also use it to sketch and then convert to midi part.

Cubase 15 has melodies in patterns now.

I thought it was a joke, until I realize

They can do anything new they want, I only want one thing: Stability
