Pdf issue

Hi,

When I export my score to pdf, there are occuring some weird lines in the layout. I have checked the project in Dorico, and they are only found in the pdf. Can anyone explain this issue? Thanks

We’ll need to see the project itself. There will be a reason for those lines. Presumably you’ve done something interesting with attempting to hide something by scaling it down, or overriding its colour, or trying to set a line width to zero, or something along those lines. But without seeing the project that gives rise to the result, how could we possibly say?

A reminder of how best to ask for help on the forum so that you get the answer you need as efficiently as possible, and you save people like me typing messages like this:

(This is a sticky post at the top of the forum.)

Sorry my fault! Yes I have indeed scaled down some notes to 1%. Is there any solution to this?

Any reason you haven’t just hidden the noteheads and stems? Or just used hidden rests?

God dammit, I never thought of doing that…

Is it possible though to hide rests?

You can use the Remove Rests command in the Edit menu.

If you can show a screenshot of what you have, and exactly what you’re trying to achieve, then other advice may be better.

Sorry for ghosting for some time, I’m back now! Here are two examples of these annoying lines, which I want to remove. They are not there in Dorico, only in the pdf. In the first pic, I’ve hidden the stem of the note (it makes the note look like tenuto). In the second, I’ve scaled down a rest or note to 1%. I don’t know if there are other clues that might explain it?

Can you please upload this part of your project.

I’ll upload the whole thing, it’s everywhere in the score…
Halfdan - Full score - 01 Sort cirkel.xml (900.5 KB)

That’s MusicXML, not a Dorico file.

Regarding the rest which was scaled down - if it is a half-note rest or a whole-note rest and it is below the staff (as in bar 19?), it is possible that its ledger line will not scale. If that is the case, then you could use Rest pos. (in Properties) to move the rest into the staff and then scale it, or maybe just select it and use Remove Rests.

Instead of scaling things to 1%, it is usually better to set opacity to 0%. You can record a macro for this.

If you want empty space for condensing instruments, you can input that as notes, and hide noteheads, stems and ledger lines, then suppress playback. You’ll need to set some of the properties twice, with condensing off and on. After that you can copy around these empty notes to create empty space.

Removing rests to create empty space is usually not a very good option, since you lose that empty space created by the rests in parts.

Thank you! I will try the opacity thing for next time. You might also be right about removing rests, since it was for layout purpose…
