Pedal lines collision

I have a very deep piano part with the pedal held down which makes the pedal line move down into the next staff. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Using 8va bassa?

Ah! That could be a viable option

Hi @steinfeld, the collision is due to the new algorithm that Dorico 6 uses for pedal lines, which has many other advantages. But in extreme cases like yours you may want to check if returning to the previous algorithm would be better for you.
There is an option for that under Engraving Options>Pedal Lines>Vertical Position>Advanced Options>Use legacy pedal line vertical positioning. Activating the checkmark, the staff spacing is corrected:

Dear Christian

Thanks so much for this! :folded_hands:t2:

However I cannot find engraving options :man_shrugging:t3:

I use elements, is your suggestion available for me?

I see. No, Engraving Options are only available in Dorico Pro.

Ok, thank you Christian

When I use 8vb or 15ma bassa the pedal line appears normal and also I find it easier to read, but I don’t know what a pianist would prefer - ledger lines or 15ma bassa.

As a pianist myself, I would prefer 8ba for the example in your screenshot.
As Liszt does…

He does it well I can see :hugs::sweat_smile:

Hello, without legacy checkbox I get this which is very strange. No extreme notes here. Should I really enable the legacy option for such a simple notation?

Please show us the entire page, in Engrave mode if possible so we can see how full the page is vertically. If one overfills the page, Dorico’s automatic spacing cannot compensate.

@dspreadbury , I see one can attach a tag for “Dorico for iPad.” Perhaps a similar tag should exist for “Dorico Elements.”

Thanks @Derrek I think there are no issues with overfilling. Just out of curiosity I copied a few bars to a new project and the problem seems to be there without any reason. I am attaching the file itself. I believe it’s related to the algorithm for pedaling. Seems it works ok when I enable “legacy algorithm” but why should on do this for such a simple situation?

If I flip the piano dynamic above the staff, the pedal line immediately moves closer to the staff. At that point I can reposition the piano dynamic manually, but other than placing it in the staff, there does not seem to be a solution without manually moving elements around.

Hi @maronidis, the issues with the new piano pedal line implementation are known by the Team (they behave differently than other PT regarding spacing)

For your example you could use a Vibraphone Ped. (with line activated in the properties panel), that you find in the Pitched Percussion PT panel.

This will give the correct spacing (but it will be nearer to the staff than dynamics, so you possibly need some dynamics repositioning):

Thank you @Christian_R and @Derrek for the suggestions. Hopefully the default behaviour will be addressed soon by the team.

In the following case at least one of the pedal line goes over the bottom page margin with and without the legacy option checked. The rest of the page has no page layout overrides:
