Pedaling and layout

This is a situation that I encounter often: the page is quite full because of page turns, but there appears to be plenty of room for the pedal lines if empty space at the bottom of the page (rectangles) is utilized and vertical spacing is tightened up throughout. And yet I get the overlaps shown at the arrows:

and do all the required spacing by hand:

Am I missing something?

The amount at the bottom left shows 109%. This means you have too many systems on the page to fit within the parameters you’ve specified for a page (page templates, music frame margins, page margins, page size, etc.) I’d be surprised if adding pedal markings didn’t collide with other items.

Consider:

  • Reducing the rastral size (Layout options)
  • Reducing the various margins in page layout (Layout options)
  • Changing the vertical inter-system gap amounts in Layout options

This is what I do to try and fix these situations — also helping the page get back to 100% so that auto-spacing can resume, as @JAMES_GILBERT said:

  1. create a copy of your Default page template
  2. delete both music frames
  3. create new music frames with smaller bottom and top margins
  4. remember to wire them to MA frame chain, not what Dorico gives you.

Apply this new template to your page. If good enough, you won!

If not, go back to the page template editor and select one of the music frames. In the Properties panel, reduce the top and bottom paddings so that they are smaller that what you set up in Layout Options > Page Setup.

If this is still not enough, then consider reducing the rastral size by a small amount for that page only.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

Thanks @JAMES_GILBERT

As the latter two examples show in the OP, the spacing works (as far as I am concerned) with the existing rastral size, margins settings. I just want Dorico to do what I had to do. I had tried changing the gaps between the systems earlier, but that did nothing good.

And if I start changing other settings it may affect other pages in ways I don’t want.

So that leads one to the suggestion by @MicheleGalvagno to create a new template for that page. I could even create a whole library of templates in advance and try each one to see if it works.

Yet it seems quicker to me to move the staves around to get the spacing I want. Trying to come up with settings that will produce the result I want seems backwards to me.

So this may be a feature request for Dorico to take anything it is given and make the spacing as good as possible independent of settings that in some cases are difficult to come up with in advance or don’t apply to all pages.
