Hi all, after reading a couple of (old) posts regarding staff label changes in divisi sections, I’m still not figuring out how to customize them on a per-system basis à la Finale. Or even if there is no divisi that has been created, I’m trying to see if I can customize the staff text on an individual system basis. Note that I’m not asking between how to toggle between full and abbreviated text but how to customize that text.
Can anyone share the current best practices way to handle this in Dorico 6 Pro, please?
In general you can’t customise staff labels on a per-system basis. Can you say a bit more about what the underlying requirement is? It may well be that there’s another way to approach what you’re trying to do.
Hey Daniel, the requirement here is to be able to show certain staff text in a divisi but then show slightly different text in a staff label. For example, there is a sectional division in violins and you want to display “1 solo” and “2 solo” as the staff text but the staff labels on the system you want to just say “div.” or something else. Or, there is a divisi section which changes from soli to sectional divisi but this is split across one system. For the staff labels on that system you indicate something like “solo/tutti” or whatnot but for the previous system it might be “solo”. If that isn’t possible you’d be forcing bars into a system artificially just so you can use Dorico’s existing methods.
If this doesn’t make sense, I’ll try and show with screenshots in an existing score.
I’ve always felt that a staff label override would be a very useful thing to have - I realize that it would be affected by system and frame breaks so that it you changed, for example a frame break on a one system page, you would lose your override, but you could then add it back in again. I’ve certainly had times when this would be useful - Not just for divisi passages, but in vocal/opera scores where you might want to label a staff differently from one page to the next, depending on a soloist who might be sharing a staff with other soloists.
This would indeed be helpful. I am just creating a mockup for a piece which has a first chamber size part and a second full orchestra part. I would like to have full staff label names on the first system of the first part which is easy but also form the first system on the second part starting on page 8 without creating a new flow.
Many Thanks Charles, That works perfectly I had double clicked expecting this would open the frame-brake settings but that opens the staff visibility menu. The full label setting is in the property panel below,
For a concrete example of why this would be needed, I have to reproduce something like what’s shown below. The basses are divided in three sections. I don’t want or need to show any per-staff text, but I do need the system label to reflect this and would prefer to write “Bassi div en 3”. If not for this ability, how would I accomplish something like this in Dorico today?
