Percussion from xml file appears too low on staff

I have transported an orchestral work over from Finale via an XML file. The snare drum line is 7 lines below the staff. How do I get it to appear on the middle line of the staff?

Hi. I suspect your Dorico file is set for percussions to use the percussion clef to react like a treble clef, while the source file is read as an bass clef (or reads percussion map instead of general midi…). There are settings in the preferences to specify how you want Dorico to handle the percussion clefs, maybe changing these could make a difference?

Thanks Marc,

I looked in preferences and I was still unable to get the appearance correct. The snare drum line is still 7 lines below the staff. I suppose I could delete it and rewrite the drum line, but…

It’s hard to say without seeing anything.

If you can share the XML, please do.

If you can’t, maybe you could copy the file in Finale, delete all other instruments in that copy, delete everything after the first few bars with notes, export that, and upload here.

If the instrument has been correctly imported as an unpitched percussion kit, you should be able to simply move the staff position in the Edit Percussion Kit dialog by dragging the instrument to the desired staff position.

Ok, here attached is the snare drum line that is pictured way too

low.

Your snare drum has been imported as part of a kit, and the music is on “Kick-Drum 3” instead of snare drum. You can go to Layout Options>Percussion and temporarily switch it to “Single-Line Instruments”, then cut and paste the music from Kick drum to S.D. and then switch back to five line staff or you can simply select the music and keep pressing alt-up-arrow until the music goes to snare. You may then edit the kit to get the instrument out of the kit if you prefer single instruments per players

Here is a pic of what your instrument looks like. For mysterious reasons, you have a kick drum in the sub-basement, and that’s where your music was before I moved it! I have circled the icon to remove an instrument from a kit if you so desire.

Thanks, I will give it a try. It’s hard when you’re a 30plus year Finale user.

Percussion handling in Dorico is very unique, but quite powerful once you get a handle on it. But xml import/export is fraught, so I feel your pain! It’s possible that all of you percussion was exported as individual full kits for example. If the instrument in a Player’s card is green (as in the pic above), then it’s a kit

Ok, I have tried the suggestions and have failed. It must be a kit, but not knowing Dorico that well, I can’t seem to find a way to push it into a normal percussion line. I’ve tried the example in the image Claude sent, but when I click on the button highlightedin the red box, the snare drum label disappears.

Ok, I finally got it worked out. Thanks Claude! I figured it out from what you sent. So simple…Once you know what to do.
