I’m setting up a percussion kit for general untuned percussion. I’m having a hard time getting velocity to adhere to my dynamics. In this example the shaker:
For the sake of example, I change the dynamic from high to low. The result:
CC goes down as expected, velocity does not. From the fact that I’m getting sound and correct notes are played, I assume my player configuration and perc map are correctly set up. My exmap expressions (Natural, Up, Down) look like this:
Anyone knows what config I’m missing?
Dorico Pro 6.1.10
Would you mind uploading an empty version of this project?
I hope it’s OK I provide a link as the file is quite large: Dropbox
Thanks!
It looks like you’ve manually changed the velocity somehow.
Select the notes in Play mode (as I have) and then go to Play > Reset Playback Overrides and you should get this:

This baffles me as the notes were freshly input and therefore shouldn’t have inherited any values, which can happen with copy/paste.
So I didn’t go down this path in trying to understand and solve the issue. In fact, when I discovered the issue, I did try and change it manually, simply to see if I could manipulate the velocity that way. But the velocity always jumped back.
I’ll try to dive a bit more into this in my original project. Thanks for the help!
By the way, I have a few follow-up questions, if you don’t mind?
This is my first configuration of a percussion kit. Works great, all instruments in a single instance. My thinking behind making this kit is that these instruments will mostly play at one or two dynamics for a given piece and not compete much with each other. And it’s nice that they take up less space in the score.
What I wonder is if there are any pitfalls to this approach, where the instruments are bit more technically entangled?
