Percussion map assigning problem

That’s a difficult one.
I want to use 3 cymbals of 3 different pitches, notated in a 5 line staff:


I’m using Spitfire Percussion and for each cymbal I can assign different playing techniques:

The question:
How do I build up my Dorico Percussion Map with 3 different cymbals and each of it has the same 6 playing techniques.
Example:
Cymbal 1 on the ‘e’ (in the 5 line Staff) has a brush on B3, a roll on midi note C4
Cymbal 2 on the ‘b’ (in the 5 line Staff) has a brush on B4, a roll on midi note C5
How do I make a difference in the percussion map so that Dorico knows when to use which cymbal for the same playing technique?
I want to have Cymbal 1 on ‘e’ with a roll and after that Cymbal 2 on a ‘b’ with a roll.
I’m lost. Would the solution be to create an extra playing-technique-name for each cymbal, for example:
cymbal 1, the playing technique’s name for a roll is ‘roll1’ on midi note C4
cymbal2, the playing technique’s name for a roll is ‘roll2’ on midi note C5
…but even then, if I use in the score the symbol for a roll, how does Dorico know if to use ‘roll1’ or ‘roll2’?

Hi. Since I’m responsible for the Spitfire Percussion maps (and MIDI mappings) shared with the dorician community, I will try to help you :wink:
First of all: are you using my maps?

Spitfire Percussion is quite a demanding library, because you need to configure it as you need (or as you think you need it). The MIDI mapping inside the VSTi is optimized for people using it in a DAW, I had to remap everything to make it usable in Dorico, and cut it into different libraries.
Here, we’re talking about unpitched Metal. Cymbals Lo, Med and Hi. I’ve mapped Lo betweed F#-1 and B1, Med is C0 to D#0 and Hi is E0 to A0. All techniques are mapped except the swell ones, which are useless in Dorico, since we are most likely to write down a tremolo note with hairpin, and those swells are really usable in a DAW…

To answer your question directly, that is what a Percussion map is there for. You tell Dorico that MIDI note C4 is dedicated to cymbal Lo roll, instrument Cymbal Lo, Playback technique roll1. So every time you input a roll to your cymbal Lo instrument (provided you’ve set it up correctly in the Edit Percussion instrument window), Dorico will trigger C4, because it’s what the Percussion map tells it to do.

as a matter of fact, I used your maps - btw: great work !
But I couldn’t find ‘cymbal Hi, cymbal Mid, cymbal low’ - that’s why I thought they are not included.
is ‘cymbal low’ == crash cymbal low (in your library ?
‘cymbal mid’ == ??
‘cymbal high’ == crash cymbal high

and another question:
I use your ‘spitfire percussions unpitched metal’ percussion map…and for example it shows:
F0 assigned Mark Tree…but your screenshot from above shows F0 assigned to ‘cymbal hi → choked hit’ …where is my mistake please?

And another thing Marc which I really don’t understand:
If i have this 5 line staff with 3 different cymbals on 3 different pitches: how do I tell Dorico
‘the cymbal on the note ‘e’ corresponds to the low cymbal in my Spitfire plugin’
‘the cymbal on the note ‘b’ corresponds to the mid cymbal in my Spitfire plugin’
and so ? I just dont’ understand…I’m sorry :person_facepalming:

All problems solved…thanx…I had to change the instrument names in your percussion map to ‘cymbal low, mid and high’…of course…my brain was out of order and played tricks on me…now I’m back on track…thanx again for everything

It’s as easy as opening the Percussion map to see what instruments had been used. Note that since Dorico 5.1 (so really not long ago) we can choose/change/create instruments. This was not available when I built up this whole thing, so I had to use existing instruments. Cymbal Mid is actually Splash cymbal, according to the percussion map. You can change this, of course (and I could do it too, it’s just time consuming…)
It’s obvious now that if I need to do this kind of work again, I will make sure the names in the VSTi match instrument names in Dorico, to make this whole process much user-friendly.

It’s all fine Marc, really…the only thing is: I can’t change the instrument in your percussion map…if I try to make ‘Ride Cymbal (low)’ - which is a Dorico instrument - out of ‘crash low’, I can’t edit it…why?

and another problem:
my sound doesn’t change from soft mallets to hard although I entered ‘nat.’ as a playing technique. Why could that be?

I suppose you must unlock it (at the top of the window). Or delete that line and re-create it.

That secondary keyswitch I admit I don’t master at all… I’ll have a look when I have some time and will keep you posted (unless some guru comes here before with the answer!)

thanx again.
No, unlock doesn’t help and the problem with deleting: a ‘normal’ Dorico user like me can’t create for example 2 midi notes ‘18’ - like you did for the keyswitches. So if I delete it, I can’t reproduce it anymore (as far as I know at least).

Strange…I could create a new one but couldn’t delete yours - even with un-locking it didn’t work…very strange
