Having watched the videos and read documentation I am still stuck.
I have loaded VSL suspended cymbal and it already has a percussion map for Dorico. However I don’t know how to get it to play the various techniques. Most are not in playing techniques in Dorico on right hand side. Does this mean I need to create the playing technique and somehow map it to the percussion map? If so, how would I do this as if I understand correctly this is different than expressino maps.
I’ve successfully created expression maps for tuned instruments but the percussion map playback has got me scratching my head!
First create the techniques in Library / Playing Techniques…
Then add the techniques with the proper symbols in the articulations panel on the right (click on the “+” button) in the related section (percussions?)
Then update your percussion map : one note for one technique
Make sure your VST maps the key pressed vs. technique as defined in your percussion map (and check if middle C is C4 or C3, otherwise you will trigger the wrong note).
Have tried but think I may be missing a vital step?

Did this

Yes, did this
Then update your percussion map : one note for one technique
Can’t find the relevant window…will keep looking. I click on the edit percussion map and get the list of midi notes available/notes names/name/instrument/key switch/playback techniques, but I think this is the wrong place to edit?

This is the dialog you need to edit Percussion Maps:
It is the Playback Techniques that you select in the Percussion Map. Make sure that your Playing Technique is triggering the appropriate Playback Technique.
This is done via the Edit Playing Techniques dialog:
