Hello,
I’m struggling through learning/creating a Percussion Map for HALion [Sonic] 7,
preset “[GM 132] Percussion”. Using Dorico Elements both 5 and 6. A lot of things
work, but there are some confusing items. I’ve read/viewed massive info on percussion
maps, to the point of overload.
I’ve determined the Wood Block note mapping in HALion by right-clicking the piano keyboard notes and inspecting the Assigned Zones. I get (in part)
54 F#2 PC_WBL_HT_S_076 [note produces low wood block hit]
56 G#2 PC_WBL_HT_S_076 [note produces high wood block hit]
Dorico has 6 choices in the instrument picker for the Percussion Map:
Wood Block (High)
Wood Block (Low)
Wood Block (.. ignore 3 more ..)
Wood Blocks [which is a kit]
Confusion 1: I would expect a “normal” case to be either:
a. More likely - Score defines a “Wood Blocks” player using a kit. A line is present for
each individual instrument high and low.
b. Less likely - Score defines separate players for each instrument high and low, no kit.
In either case, the percussion map would have 2 entries for high and low instruments and corresponding note numbers / samples. Testing seems to verify this.
Confusion 2: If a Kit “Wood Blocks” is assigned to a MIDI note in the percussion map, it seems that any/all notes in the kit trigger the same sample (verified by testing). That
seems unusual, although there might be a case where it is useful.
I’ve tried to stick to the most specific instrument names in the map, corresponding to samples as well as possible.
Any clarification would be appreciated.
