I’m writing a percussion piece for table.
The performer simply taps on the table in different positions.
So, I need a five-line staff to define the different areas where he should drum.
I created this using a standard five-line staff and assigned a drum kit sound for playback.
However, it’s a bit annoying to hear different percussion sounds because it’s very different from how it will actually sound.
I’d rather have the same sound for all five lines (and spaces).
How can I do this?
Or alternatively, do you know a VST that lets me change the sound for each note?
Which drum kit VST are you using? My first thought, because it would be the fastest and easiest solution, would be to edit the VST’s kit to all use the same sound. For example some drum kit VSTs allow you to modify and swap out each drum for any other drum or sample, so you could thus change each one you’re using to all use a hi-hat or perhaps something thuddy like a floor tom etc. If it’s a good VST you’ll have the advantage of it using round robins and could even add subtle tuning variations to each one, so there would be a slight timbral difference while still sounding all like “table.”
EDIT: if you’re using the default which loads with the Dorico/Halion playback template, it appears to load Groove Agent SE. I’m a bit less familiar with it, but it seems you can’t merely swap samples for other ones for some odd reason. However I discovered after poking around if you go into the tab which says “midi FX” and change pad mode to “remote” you can select any other available sample, in my case I chose Tom D which is a floor tom. You could of course choose whatever sound represents your idea best. It changed the pad icon to something which looks like a WiFi signal. But basically now all those pads trigger the same sound. Then perhaps save this as a kit or project to recall later. Hope that helps!
