Physikal output-setup for 2 videotracks on 2 Monitors

I’m using a macbook pro M1 (2021) and my question is:

Can I connect 2 Monitors to show 2 different videotracks (in a song)?

One via HDMI is already connected. (Lyrictrack goes via sidecar and WLAN/acesspoint to an ipad)

Can I connect the (optional) 2nd Monitor via adapter (usb-C to HDMI) direktly to the macbook or do I need any other hardware?

I know that I can google but maybe somebody has an answer or a tipp which hardware might be the right one.

Thanx in advance

You can! But read this carefully
If you have M1-M5 you need to feed all ext monitors via separated cable (1 display / 1 laptop-out). HUB with 2*HDMI wont work with M1-M5 laptops. Sidecar is additional on the top, takes no display-slot from armCPU

BUT with M-chip Pro / Max laptops are - afaik - able to use 3ext monitors. Can 2 via HUB for dual-screen and a third on another port (+sidecar :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:).

So answer: YES, but need to reserve laptop ports for ext-monitor

Dear Felician,

like so often…THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!

That really helps me!

Have a nice day :slightly_smiling_face:

Some additional note. This is true, if you use HDMI. In case you use thunderbolt, you can cascade 2 monitors on one output, even with a docking station, which supports thunderbolt.

AFAIK just with Pro/Max chips. Noted this on all docking stations i’ve seen

I have a Macbook Air (M4) and use it with a Sonnettech Echo 20 thunderbolt 4 docking station and 2 monitors cascaded to the thunderbolt outlet.

Woww, good to know. So you have 3 different desktops (incl. laptop-screen) with a dual-HDMI-port TB4 hub? None of are mirrored screens, do I get it right?

Not quite. I don’t use any HDMI. The 2 external monitors are connected via cascaded Thunderbolt and of course as third the laptop-screen.

O I see! TB DaisyChaining is a special case :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: you need TB capable screen for that, but most monitors has HDMI/DP ports only

That’s right, but this was one of my essential criteria of the monitors

Unfortunately on stage environment:
No distance with TB cables
LED controllers and video mixers doesnt receive TB connections.

I use this setup at home, when preparing. At rehearsal or on stage I use only the laptop and its screen ;).

Hi,

Thank you for your interesting exchange of ideas. It is very helpful for me to follow the different approaches.
Apparently, I am not the only one who is a little unsure about this.

I’ll stay “tuned”…:victory_hand:
