Piano mix

Hi all,

I have made an live piano recording and am now working with trying to get the mix of the recording right. I worked quite a bit with how to setup the microphones (which were quite good) during the recording so I think thats as good as I can get it. Though, the recording is still quite “roomy” due to a lot of ackoustic sound from the piano itself which makes it a bit blurry. I have now tried to get the mix right, mostly with EQ and compressors but is still not fully happy with the result. There is just so much sound in a piano. Does anyone of you all has some suggestions on how to get a better result?

Hard to diagnose without knowing the exact sound. You are likely gonna get a bunch of answers/approaches.

So here’s one of them. Try this.

  1. Duplicate your Track and and route both copies to a Group Channel.
  2. Pull the fader all the way down on one of them so you don’t hear it for now.
  3. On the audible Track add a Gate Insert
  4. Adjust the Gate so you only hear the direct sound and not any ambient sound - this will sound pretty unnatural.
  5. Now slowly bring up the ungated Track to restore some of the ambience.
  6. Adjust settings to taste.
