Piano not sounding in SATB + Piano arrangement

I am getting more comfortable with the program! Writing a string quartet. Writing a lead sheet. Started in on an SATB + Piano arrangement. The vocal parts playback. The piano does NOT playback. In write mode, I see the piano notes on the keyboard, so I know the software is registering them, but I can’t figure out why they don’t sound. I don’t even know where to go look for the sounds in the software, so that might be the answer I need. Thank you!

Gary, welcome to the forum.
Have a look in Play Mode.
Select the piano.
Click onto the little “E” to see, which sounds are linked to which instruments.
If there is none for the piano, you can apply a piano sound there.

Can you upload an example project file that shows the problem?

Thanks k_b. I found an acoustic grand piano GM001 and dragged and dropped it. So now I get sounds. Thanks for that.

What I don’t understand is why it didn’t automatically load when I set up my score. The voices did, but not the piano. Any insight would be appreciated.

I’m a Finale transfer, so many of the screens and icons are still new to me. It took awhile for me to figure out how to find the Piano and then drag and drop it into the channel. I suspect there are other pianos also, but haven’t figured that out. It’s not critical to my work that the piano sound be perfect - just representative.

Thanks again!

Thanks benwiggy. k_b solved my issue for me, though I do still wonder why it didn’t auto-load the patch when I created the score, since it did load voices. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks!

It should automatically load in for a Piano instrument. Perhaps an XML import instrument wasn’t recognised as anything?

OTherwise, you can always re-apply the playback template.

Gary, yes thats one possibility and good for the start. Still Dorico offers much more beautiful piano sounds, search for YAMAHA S90ES Piano, for example. Or if you have Etude Elements installed (came with Dorico 6.1), it also has some high quality piano sample variants (Concert Grand Elements, Stage Grand Elements, Church Grand Elements and a lot more). YAMAHA S90ES Piano is my favourite one.

Thank you. I do have 6.1 so I’ll dig around for it. The sound library is so much deeper and different to access than the short list from Finale! It will be an important thing to learn over time. All of my music writing at the moment is sent out to real humans to play, so I tend to not get too wrapped up in the perfect sound for my basic playback needs. But who knows what the future will hold! Thanks again for your assistance.

Thanks benwiggy. I’m not sure what sound library Dorico defaults to, but I also didn’t think about re-applying the playback template. Another menu item for me to learn! Thanks again.

You might want to look at the Dorico Tutorials on Playback… eg.

(Edit: I think the latest version of Dorico will automatically load the Etude Elements Piano instrument if it is available)

Thanks Janus. The other Dorico YouTubes have been helpful. I’ll dig into this one. Thanks for the heads up!
