Piano/vocal score with notes that should only be played if the band is not present

I’m notating a score for a musical, which is orchestrated for a small band lead by a piano. I also need a piano part that can be played in rehearsals without the full band (meaning it might need to play notes that it shouldn’t play with the full band)

Here’s a simple example:

Here, I don’t want the double the bass if the bass is playing, to avoid muddiness. But when the piano accompanies in rehearsal it should.

Initially, I tried to use “Scale: Cue” which seemed to work well (like in the picture). However, I realized, it does not apply in all layouts, which makes this not useful, unless there is a way to make it apply for all layouts.

Then I tried cues, but I had a couple of problems:

  1. The cue appears in the wrong octave, because bass is transposing but piano is not.
  2. The piano still have a rest, which is confusing for the rehearsal pianist.
  3. In the original version I actually had the piano double in octave (this makes sense if you consider piano bass is less strong without doubling)

I also considered completely duplicating the piano part, but that has obvious disadvantage that if I want to update it I have to update it two placed, and it could drift.

Would do you think is the right approach here? I suspect it would request a combination of features I might not be familiar with.

Do this if you didn’t have it set to Global:

@ShacharHarshuv, to be honest, I ALWAYS create a seperate “Rehearsal Piano” player for the rehearsal pianist to play.
