We did just discuss this a month ago (in case the mods want to merge threads), but it’s still a valid point, and Dorico really should support both ways of handling this. I’m not sure about Sib or MS, but this isn’t that hard to do in Finale using TGTools/Layout/Staff List Manager.
That said, there certainly is support for Dorico’s way as well. In addition to Gould, the current Boosey & Hawkes style guide has this:
Personally, I prefer woodwind doubles to be organized by player, so I know who to yell at when they screw up. There are obviously plenty of examples of both ways of handling this though, so it seems like Dorico should have an option to accomplish this without workarounds.
