Pickup bar-whole rest

How do I insert a whole rest into an empty staff in a pickup bar?

A whole rest is needed at the indicated location, but it isn’t being generated.

How long is your pickup bar? If it’s a whole bar, Dorico should fill it with a whole bar rest (although if it’s a whole bar, it’s arguably not a pickup bar…)

If it’s shorter than that, personally I wouldn’t want to see a whole bar rest anyway, it’s like to see how many beats the pickup was so I know what’s happening.

But as to how you’d do that if it’s shorter, I’m not sure, someone cleverer than me will be along to tell you, of it’s possible.

Cheers,

P

EDIT: Sorry, for some reason, I didn’t see your picture…

It may not be the best solution but you could try the opposite approach: Don’t use a pickup measure and hide the initial rest in the part(s) that has(have) notes….

You can select the eighth rest, Shift+B, type rest, Enter

(If you really need a full-bar rest here).

Aside from the fact that solutions have already been mentioned, I would definitely write an eighth-note rest at the beginning of the first staff. Otherwise, you can’t understand the meter of the first measure at first glance.

That’s not on you. The picture was not there at first. OP edited the post without caring to respond or at least clarify that the picture was added later. This is not the first time unfortunately.

(As for the actual question I totally agree with @BassoContinuo. A 3.5 beat pickup bar in a 4/4 time sig is just asking for trouble and indeed makes it harder to read, even for the players who have notes there.)

Thanks.

@charles_piano shows you a solution, but that does not change the fact that musically what you want is wrong.

Personally, I would avoid the pick up altogether and show the missing rest in the instrument that has notes.
