Pitch / note duration entry

Very new to Dorico, worked on Finale since the 80’s.

I’m a little unclear on how the pitch / then duration works. Something about the (k) key?

I am particularly interested in using a midi keyboard to input. One issue I’ve not seen on any of these videos… playing a chord on the midi keyboard, then hitting a ‘number’ for duration. I write primarily for piano, so this is extremely important for my work flow. Thanks for the quick reply.
