Your double bass plays back pizzicato as expected for me. Are you running the latest 3.5.10 update? If not, I suggest you download and install that from this page.
I did the update but still playing back Arco. I also tried downloading the file I uploaded and it still plays back Arco for me. I am using Note Performer also.
Thanks for your help!
FWIW your score plays correctly for me (running on Windows).
I’m guessing you have somehow got incompatible versions of NP and the expression map. Have you got the latest version of NotePerformer? (3.3.1 released in December 2019). If not, it’s a free upgrade.
Also, in Dorico Preferences / Play, tick the option to automatically update expression maps to new versions.
Note Performer is the latest version. I just bought it this week so I never had an older version of Note Performer. I had already had that check box ticked.
I notice the similarity between the latest version numbers of Dorico (3.5.1) and NotePerformer (3.3.1) and wonder if this might have led to confusion regarding the suggestions to update Dorico AND NotePerformer to their latest versions?
Well, NP 3.3.1 should work with Dorico 3.5 and 3.5.10 - and apparently it does play back the attached score for other people (including me).
Sorry, but I don’t have any more ideas here.
When I play your file using Dorico Pro 3.5.10 and NP 3.3.1, I hear this:

Do you also hear this but expect something else?
Perhaps you’re expecting something like a Bartok pizz.?
-t
Small group piece for upload - Flow 1.mp3.zip (923 KB)
That mp3 is what I hear. That’s Arco right the whole time, right? It doesn’t change at measure 5? It sounds like a bow attack just shortened to a quarter note. It has none of the roundness or thump of pizz. When I put it back to Dorico playback it works correctly.
That’s what I hear as well, and it isn’t the arco sound.
Try turning the contrabass reverb in the NP mixer down to somewhere between 5 and 10.
Thanks all for your help. Sorry for the wild goose chase. Thank you for the tip on the reverb. I wonder if I can eq it…
Remember NP is designed to model an orchestral playing style. You won’t get a jazz or folk style bass pizzicato sound.
(And IMO the contrabass isn’t the best instrument in NP anyway!)
Can I change the playback of a single instrument?
This video might help. Much of it is specifically about the BBCSO library but it does explain how to mix and match instruments from different sample libraries (e.g. you might find a bass you like better in the HALion sounds bundled with Dorico and use NotePerformer for everything else). The relevant stuff starts at about 9 minutes.
I was having the same issue today, after checking the expression maps as described above, I found nothing was listed for Noteperformer, even though I was using the NP sounds. I changed the playback template to silence, switched it back to Noteperformer and everything was working. Hope this helps someone, going forward.
