Play/Pause with multimedia key

Hi!

Please make Cubase respond to the Play/Pause multimedia key.

Thanks.

Can you not assign it in Key Commands?

I wish it were that easy… So no.

The play/pause key is nice because it can be somewhat programmable. You just need to open a media app (VLC, QuickTime, Music app, etc) and hit play (on the GUI). Then you press the play/pause key to start the playback or pause that app. And you can do the same thing with another app. No tedious command/key assignments necessary.

Unfortunately, Cubase is not seen by the OS as a media app. I know I could eventually find a workaround and assign maybe another key, but why can’t I just use a functionality that’s already there?

For example:
I could assign the play/pause key to F20, then, in BMT or BTT, I would set F20 as trigger for an AppleScript.

Unfortunatelly, I would lose this automatic programmable feature of play/pause function, not to mention that if I were to magically concoct a script that works in every context, the play/pause key can’t be simulated. At least this is how it seems.

VLC has this option which could maybe also be added to Cubase:

If you open Key Commands in Cubase, highlight the field where you enter keyboard keys and press your Play key, what shows up?

If you assign the Play/Pause key to F20, there is no need to use a 3rd party application such as Bome. Just simply assign F20 to StartStop in Cubase.

I don’t want to put words in the OP’s mouth, but one of the problems with assigning a key within Cubase is that you can’t start/stop/pause playback when Cubase is not the focus app.

I wish this feature could be implemented because I’m frequently adjusting something in VE Pro and want Cubase to stop/start playing as I make changes.

Not sure if this is part of the OP’s plan, though.

Nada. Niente.

Yeah, but as I said, I would lose the functionality of play_or_pause key (which is flexible functionality). Also, as @Mahlon said, if Cubase is not in focus, I can’t start or pause the playback using a keyboard command set in the Key Commands window.

As a workaround, I could use ControllerMate or Bome to assign F20 to a MIDI note message and then use MIDI Remote or Generic Remote to convert that to Cubase StartStop , but that’s not nice when a native functionality exists. This is too much talk. No biggie if it can’t be done. Thanks!

I’m not too familiar with MacOS, but if you use Keyboard Maestro, does it let you re-assign keys on a per application basis?

I think this is something different and I’m not sure I would want such a behavior.

Yeah, but it doesn’t help much.

Me neither.

StartStop should respond to Play/Pause media key by default. This is the best option. Because it’s user friendly!
