Hello all, I’m a professional composer new to Dorico and am frustrated by quite a few things, one of which is that my playback randomly starts playing tremolo on the highlighted notes despite there not being a tremolo there. What gives???
You probably have an expression map applied to that instrument that does not match the sound patch you are using.
Thank you for replying. Why is that expression map there and how to I get rid of it?
Usually, when you apply a playback template, the instruments in your score are routed to appropriate patches in the libraries used in the playback template. This routing means choosing the appropriate playback instruments and the proper expression map. The expression map is what ensures that the library will respond correctly to the different playback techniques triggered by your score, so you certainly do not want to get rid of it! What you probably want is that the proper expression map has been chosen.
How have you set up your VSTi in Play mode? Have you used a playback template or have you been routing things manually?
I’m afraid I’m new to Dorico and I’m not sure how to answer your questions. I did have to monkey with some things because I have a divisi which then reverts back to unison and the solo is pizzicato and gli altri are arco. Could help me help you help me by rephrasing the question so I can getter answer it (if you look here, then click there, then there, what does it say under X?)
Post your project (if that is possible) and usually you will get a full and accurate solution within the hour…
I understand that you’re new, that you’ve started with quite a big project (I 'd say starting with a melody could have been a good idea!) so the amount of information must be quite overwhelming…
Dealing with play-back stuff is certainly not the easiest part, and one tool that helps us most is NotePerformer, although that involves an additional cost (129€, IIRC).
The libraries included in Dorico do work, but not as seamlessly (as you’ve noticed with your alto flute).
To go back to specifics of your project, it looks like writing a G flat in your viola staff triggers tremolo, this is probably because the expression map associated with the viola section has a tremolo playback technique triggered by that note (keyswitch), which is unfortunate : keyswitches are set outside the instrument’s range for a reason!
Thank you Marc! Here is the file. I will look into Note Performer - thank you!

Getting correct playback of Solo/gli altri divisi is certainly not straightforward. (Hopefully there will be some improvements in Dorico 6)
Here’s one solution…

The method I’ve used here is to reserve one voice (upstem voice 2) for the solo notes and manually added the solo sound patch and correct expression map to Halion to playback that voice. (I’ve done the same for the Cello).
Hope this helps.
This is also how I do it.
