Hello, I’m currently using Dorico 5.
I entered pizzicato, but the arco sound continues to play.
I tried to fix it based on a pizzicato-related post from October 2023, but the issue still persists.
I’ve attached the Dorico file.
It seems that pizzicato is not being applied properly, and in addition, I’m hearing a strange sound instead of the expected viola sound.
How can I resolve this issue?
pizzicato .dorico (2.5 MB)
The first thing to try is Play menu->Playback Template and reapply the Playback Template. And welcome to the forum. I only use Noteperformer so not sure what the default Playback Templates are called.

Thank you. The issue with the strange sound has been resolved. However, I still haven’t been able to fix the pizzicato part.
As I said, I only use Noteperformer, and your file plays pizzicato OK here with Noteperformer. Perhaps someone with Halion could check it.

I applied the HSO as well as the Iconica templates (ones with GASE) and pizz renders correctly.
Sorry, no help.
I’ve downloaded and opened your file. Many strange things happen, there’s a high drone note that seems to be coming from the reverb — I could not find the source… When I reapply the playback template, obviously I get different instruments. I’ve seen you have routed your strings intruments to Iconica Sketches initially, and applying a playback template routes HSO intruments. This is because Iconica does not have solo strings, and you’ve been using solo players in Setup mode. I don’t know how accurate this is, according to your needs. Then, to have Dorico play the right playback technique, you need to attribut a (good working) expression map to your instrument, so that the accurate keys or whatever command triggers are correctly triggered. This is why we recommend using the factory playback templates, they have been tested for years now and they are reliable.
So my question would be: do you need solo strings or not?
Here’s your file, set with that playback template
pizzicato .dorico (944,7 Ko)
It’s playing just fine.
When I open your file I see this…
- You have the wrong Expression Map assigned to your Viola 1 (The Iconica Sketch map cannot be used with the HSSE Solo Viola)
- Is there a reason you are using General Midi instruments? Are you perhaps running Dorico 5 SE? If so, then (IIRC) pizz is not available as an articulation.
If you are not running SE, then as the others have said, re-applying a Playback Template should sort everything out.
Yes, that’s correct. I selected Viola solo in the instrument setup, entered some notes, and then pressed Shift+P to input pizz. However, pizzicato didn’t work, and I couldn’t figure out why. I tried various things while looking for solutions, but I ended up messing up the settings.Since I’m Korean and not very fluent in English, I’ve been using translation tools to help me understand. I need solo viola
Have you tried and opened the Dorico file I sent? It’s all set and working fine. You can use it!
Thank you so much for your kind and helpful explanation. I’ve checked the file you sent, and I truly appreciate it.
