While engraving the full score I sometimes like to hear the bar of a single instrument only, right now when selecting a bar, all the instruments are playing back. Is this possible though to hear only the selected instrument?

Yes, of course, but it would be nice if this could be done quickly in Write mode while doing the engraving.
