Playback of divided section players

Hello, I’ve got a string section in which all the instruments (except the basses) are divided at various points. At the points of division I’m using the ‘change divisi’ function and then the ‘restore unision’ function when the section players reverts back to unison.

I’ve enabled independent voice play back and routed staff B to a an additional instance - a clone of the instrument routed to staff A. (This is so that I can use different articulations in the divided parts)

The problem I’ve having is that, even when in unison, the Vlns 1, violas, and cellos are sending playback information to both their instances - which as you might imagine is producing a rather undesirable fuzzy and phasey effect.

Obviously, this is expected behaviour when the parts are actually divided doing different things.

The some reason, Vlns 2 is behaving appropriately - i.e. only the single primary instance is playing when in unison.

This suggests there might be an option I can’t find to control this behaviour. Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction?

Many thanks, Ian

Hi @Ian_Lawson it is difficult to say what is happening without the Project, the VEpro project and the Expression map.

I would suggest to check all the midi channel routings of your cloned instruments, (and compare them also with the working Violin.2) in all places where some unwanted doubling is happening :

-in Dorico (Playmode, select the single tracks/voices and check the Track Inspector
-in VEPro

-and in SINE player

Sorry that I cannot help more…

Thanks very much, Christian. Reading your comments reminded me that I could put the pair of staves on different midi channels. I don’t see why this should be necessary (as they are going to separate instances - and the violin 2. staves weren’t on different channels) but it worked. Luckily my expression maps all use relative Channel changes. Best wishes, Ian
