Playback of Messa di Voce

I often write a series of messa di voce (<>) adjacent to each other, as do many other composers. (An example from Brahms, not engraved in Dorico, is attached.)

When Dorico plays these back, it seems to result in a crescendo on top of the messa di voce series — that is, each one starts louder than the next. Does anyone else experience this, and is there a workaround for playback?

Julian,

What happens when you actually specify the starting and end points for each messa di voce?

That is, p < mf mf > p etc
