I am using Dorico 6. I exported a Sibelius file to XML compressed (it warned me that there were graphic elements that would not be rendered unless I used the compressed version). Imported into Dorico, separated the movements into flows, and recreated the title pages which did not get included.
When I play the file, either in the default playback template or in the NotePerformer template each note sounds only a very brief sound with no dynamic variation. Note length looks accurate in the midi channels in Play mode but all notated note length values and dynamics are ignored in playback. Suggestions?
I also tried an uncompressed musicxml file from Sibelius and the same thing is happening.
In case it helps with diagnosis, attached is the Dorico file with the first movement of the piece. The musicxml file is too large to upload and Sibelius can’t export less than the entire piece.
I opened your Dorico file in Dorico 6 and also in Dorico 5. In both cases all notes played at their full value after I had gone into Play > Playback Template… and applied a template. I don’t have NotePerformer, so I wasn’t able to do any investigating there.
In early 2024 I had a similar playback problem to what you described. It was caused by my having downloaded and installed Iconica Sketch as soon as it became available, that is, a couple of weeks (if my memory is correct) before the Dorico 5.1 update. I thought that I would be really clever and use this new functionality early. Well, I wasn’t really that clever as it turned out.
I assume that the Dorico 5.1 update also included the expression map for Iconica Sketch, because playback using Iconica Sketch worked properly after I had installed the Dorico 5.1 update (which included Iconica Sketch).
I don’t know if that is in any way connected with your situation, but I have mentioned it because it might be something to do with expression maps.
If you have MuseScore, you might want to try importing the original musicxml file into that, exporting it and then importing that file into Dorico.
Thank you @StevenJones01 for testing on your instance. I’ve tried switching to different playback templates and expression maps, but the problem persists. Then I tried a recent composition done in Dorico that played perfectly a couple of weeks ago and that file is exhibiting similar behavior.
So it appears something has gone wrong with my Dorico setup and none of my files will play back correctly, no matter which playback template I use.
Now when I restart Dorico the audio engine is not loading. I selected Terminate. Here is the resulting diagnostics zip in case that can help diagnose the issue. Starting Dorico again I am able to open the application and the file but the issue persists.
I keep hoping that someone from Steinberg will pop in here with some advice on this blocking situation with Dorico playback. I didn’t mention above but I’m running Dorico on a Windows 10 desktop. It has worked well for the past 2 years and this is the first blocking issue I’ve faced. I’d like to understand why it happened if possible (see attached diagnostic file). If I don’t hear otherwise by this weekend I’ll try reinstalling Dorico. @Ulf or @dspreadbury can you offer some advice? Thanks.
@Ulf solved my issue on a zoom call. Turns out my ASIO driver was either corrupted or outdated. Installed an updated driver for Scarlett interface and am back to full sound. Thank you Ulf!
