Playback stopped working

Well a new frustrating problem with Dorico. It stopped playing back sound. All other software is working perfectly, Finale, MuseScore and Sibelius, Youtube, etc., but not Dorico. I’ve done all the normal stuff to get it back working but no joy. I am going to completely uninstall it and do a reinstall but this is so frustrating and it certainly makes it hard to love Dorico.

Here is the file I was working on when Dorico decided to stop playback perhaps someone can see a problem.
Slaying of the Nemean Lion.dorico (1.1 MB)

There is no problem with the file. It plays back fine.

Just try Play> Playback Template… and re-apply the NotePerformer template. (Absolutely no need to reinstall)

Already did that several times. Plus did a full uninstall and reinstall. Still no playback from any Dorico file while all else is playing OK. Obliviously something is turned off in Dorico so what could it be?

I tried to export a sound mp3 and it plays so the problem is some setting in Dorico.

Please load a project and then do from the menu Help > Create Diagnostic Report. The corresponding zip file then attach to a reply here. Thanks

I did u/l the file I was working on when the sound stopped. I copied the same file to my laptop and it plays correctly. So it is not the file or files. All other sounds are working correctly. So it is not the computer. There is something inside Dorico.

Done and reboot, no change.

If you do as Ulf asks (create and upload a diagnostic report), he will be better able to see what’s going on inside Dorico.

Hi @eebiggs1,
please do exactly as I wrote in my previous posting. If I have such diagnostic report I can help you most quickest. Seriously.

OK I misunderstood you as I thought you wanted a file I created in Dorico.
Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.2 MB)

Here is a recent file it that is of any help too.
The Hydra and the Second Task4.dorico (1.5 MB)

Again all other software is working correctly.

Could you please load that Dorico file before you create the diagnostic report?
Thanks

Hi @eebiggs1,
so far I could not find the smoking gun in the log files.
What if you switch on the Metronome, does that also make no sound during playback?
And once again, could you please create another diagnostic report, but before doing so, first load Hydra project in, wait until the Play button becomes green and then create the diagnostics.
Thanks a lot

There is no sound of any kind from Dorico. The meters indicate it is playing and if I export an mp3 it plays. This happened suddenly as all was well until it wasn’t.
Thanx so much for looking into this.

Here is Dorico playing The Hydra.
The Hydra and the Second Task

I have the same problem. I am wondering if it is something to do with the age of my computer. I am using Dorico Elements 4 on a 2012 iMac with OS Catalina version 10.15.7, which cannot be upgraded any more. Does anyone know if this might be the cause?
Noeline Hobson

Quite possible. My 2012 MacBook will not support the versions of Dorico beyond 3.5.

I have a relatively new gaming PC computer running WIndows 11. I just did a complete uninstall and reinstall with an uninstall utility that deletes registry elements too. Problem still there.

Plus I don’t see where Dorico has any support from the company. That’s odd even Sibelius and Finale had and have technical support. No wonder they love the forum community so much!

Dorico staff monitor and respond to this forum.

If you have a problem, upload your diagnostics (do help>create diagnostic report and upload the file here)

Ulf, who asked to see the diagnostic report, is a Steinberg employee. You can recognize them on the forum from the little Steinberg logo in their avatars.

Hi @Noeline_Hobson ,
it depends, I’d say. Does Dorico still start up with you?
Can you create/load projects?
If that’s the case then most likely it is just a wrong setting.

Cheers,
Ulf

Thanks, Ulf. I’m relieved to know I don’t have to consider a new computer!
I can load projects and work on them, save them, print them - but nothing I have tried produces a sound. In fact when I hit play absolutely nothing happens - no green maker line, no sounds, no metronome sounds.
Perhaps I should re-install everything?
I’m looking for the easiest and simplest way as I do not have a lot of experience . Any help will be gratefully appreciated.
Regards, Noeline
PS I’m really enjoying using Dorico, but I do need the sound …
