Does anyone have any advice on how to get Dorico to do falls (in a jazz context) during playback? I’m guessing it’s done through playback techniques, but I’m having trouble figuring it out.
Thanks!

One of the better-ish sounding ways, is if you have a sample library that has one or more specific “fall” samples that is triggered by a keyswitch or cc.
If it’s a keyswitch, I tend not to bother setting up a playback technique and use Dorico’s midi region feature to just quick and dirty enter the keyswitch - they don’t show in print or mess with your score display.
As you say, you can also create (and hide with parentheses) a custom playing technique - but in this case they don’t seem to save much time over the midi region.
Yes, really, you need a library that contains falls as patches. For instance Garritan’s JABB does, so you just need to add an Expression for Falls to the Expression Map with the relevant MIDI switch, and then just add the notated falls with the Jazz Ornaments.
If you haven’t got a fall sound, then you’ll have to do it manually with pitch bend, which may not be entirely convincing and will be time consuming.
Thanks for the reply. I’ve got to play around with this and see if I can get it working.
Thanks for the reply. I do have Garritan’s JABB. I’ll have to see if I can teach myself about the Expression Map and MIDI switches. I’ll ask more questions if I hit a roadblock.
Hi Ben. I have grappled with this for a few days now and am still failing to grasp how to get it to work. I do have Garritan JABB and do see the expression map window with the fall that you posted a screen shot of. But I can’t figure out the next step.
How do I get the fall to play as I play my keyboard? I can get a few muted sounds on the trumpet by holding down various keys in the low register of my keyboard, but none of them trigger a fall. Like your screen shot, the Control Change for a fall is set to 15 (as is a doit). How do map the fall to a key switch?
And once it’s got a key switch, how do I connect it to a fall symbol written in the score?
Also, can I get a ^ on a note to play as a staccato?
Your help is much appreciated!
John
The general principle is…
That is unlikely to happen. It will play when you come to playback your score if you have notated it correctly
Dorico by default interprets ^ as marcato(which is the common definition of the mark). Since that is built-in, I think you would need to change the entry in the Expression Map so that marcato and staccato are the same.
Thanks for your reply, Janus. Any chance you’d be willing to hop on a Zoom session to guide me through this?
Zoom? Sorry, I’m a Neanderthal. (I don’t even possess a webcam)
Have you watched the official tutorial on Expression Maps?
I wonder if it would work anyway. I just need to share my screen. Would you be up for trying? If so, I’ll send you a link.
Oh, and I have watched that tutorial as well as a couple others. I still don’t get it. I’m my own kind of Neanderthal. lol
I’m happy to help in general - but I’m shutting down now (UK based)
Got it. I’m kind of at an impasse. I’ve got the Edit Playing Techniques window open and don’t see “fall” in there even though it’s an available technique in my Garritan JABB sound library. So I don’t even know how to do step one.
Maybe someone else will see this and will be up for helping me figure it out in a Zoom session. Thanks for your input! And goodnight.
John
There is no “fall” playing technique because it is in the ornaments panel, it is not a playing technique.
It does, however, still trigger the “fall” playback technique.
In this screen shot, I have a staccato (which triggers), a short fall (which doesn’t trigger), a marcato (which I would like to trigger as a staccato because that’s how it is used in jazz sheet music), and a long fall (which doesn’t trigger).
How do I get them to trigger?
You have to add a new switch to your expression map (not sure whether it is a base switch or an add-on switch) linked to “fall”. it will have to be configured to send the appropriate CC values and/or keyswitches.
Do I do this in the Expression Map?
Yes. Like shown in the 3rd post of this thread, probably, by @benwiggy
I have that window open, and it looks exactly like Ben’s only there’s a 33 instead of a 40 in the Control Change line. What more do I need to do to connect it to the ornament symbol in my score?
