I have a project into which I am importing 30 mxl files from Finale. I am about two-thirds of the way through and had to make a change in endpoint routing. I can close and reopen my project and that change stays in place. However, after exporting the Endpoint Configuration using the export icon at the bottom of the VST Instruments section in the VST and MIDI tap, then creating a new Playback Template based on the current one and then editing it by adding the new Endpoint Configuration and deleting the old one, when I click Apply and Close, a new VST instance is created. So I got the endpoints reset then exported the Playback Template to a folder on my hard drive. If I close and then reopen my project and then import the new Playback Template, overwriting the one already showing in my project, then click Apply and Close, the same thing happens. A new instance of the VST is created.
My project uses four instances of the ARIA Player (Multi), numbered 2, 3, 4 and 5. The new instance is numbered 6.
I have uploaded 3 screenshots showing the Apply Playback Template dialog box, the Edit Playback Template dialog box, as well as the Edit Endpoint Configurations dialog box. The difference between the three is that I scroll down the list of endpoints to show all of them. There are only four instances of the ARIA Player (Multi) in this endpoint configuration. It should be sufficient. The problematic instrument is a percussion kit. The 4th of 4 percussion kits. Its endpoint is channel 8 of ARIA Player (Multi) 5. Whatever I try, when I apply the playback template. A new instance of the ARIA player is created. It is held by a player that also holds Tubular Bells and a Timpani. It’s almost like the endpoint of Percussion 4 didn’t get into the Endpoint Configuration, even though that endpoint configuration was created after I had it routed Percussion 4 where I want it, so, without an endpoint, Dorico created a new instance of the ARIA Player to route it to.
I have not attached my project file as I would have to pare it down to just one flow to be comfortable uploading it to the forum. I’ve done that before for other posts and I’m getting tired of it.
Hi. Do any of your instruments have independent voice playback (IVP) enabled?
If so, you are probably running into the IVP issue discussed here. This thread and those mentioned in that thread describe the problem as it applies to VE Pro. But I have seen this issue with Aria player also.
No, none of my instruments have independent voice playback enabled.
It is a percussion kit held by a player that also holds two pitched instruments, tubular bells and timpani. I could run some more tests to try to see if that has anything to do with it, but I’m tired of running tests to chase down problems. I need to make progress on my project.
I can live with this because it’s just one extra instance of the ARIA Player. But it’s frustrating. I’m finding that Endpoint Configurations are very limited when it comes to percussion.
Test project before and after applying the Playback Template. Note that the Endpoint Configuration was created from the configuration in place in the project before applying the Playback Template. The result after applying the Playback template looks very much like the endpoint set for Percussion 4 simply didn’t make it into the Endpoint Configuration, so, applying the Playback Template containing that Endpoint Configuration resulted the creation of another instance of the VST. I have seen results like this on other occasions during my testing, where there are problematic endpoints, always for percussion in my case, that seemingly don’t make it into the Endpoint Configuration.
I tried opening the Playback Template file that I saved to disk with a code editor (BBEdit) to try to see if I could figure it out. It was complex enough that it would take more time than I am willing to take to decipher it.
I wish that Dorico had a dialog box that showed, in detail, all of the connections and data in an Endpoint Configuration.
In aria player 5, you have percussion 1 and percussion 4 assigned to the same midi channel. Fix this, recreate the endpoint, and the extra instance won’t happen when you apply the playback template.
That is very strange because, on my computer, the before file shows Percussion 1, 2, 3 & 4 are on ARIA Player 5, channels 1, 4, 7 & 8 and the after file shows Percussion 1, 2, & 3 are on ARIA Player 5, channels 1, 4, 7, and Percussion 4 is on ARIA Player 6, channel 1.
Here is the Playback Template. I opened it with BBEdit but only a couple of the files in the package are readable by it, and they don’t seem to show the connections.
This is what I see when I check the midi channel assignment for Percussion 1 and Percussion 4. They are both assigned to channel 1 of the 05 - Aria Player.
Thank you. I see it too on my file. So, I moved Player 4 to channel 8, then exported to yet another Endpoint Configuration. I saved this file without applying the new configuration. Then I save it to another after file and applied the new configuration in it. I still get the new ARIA instance when I apply the new template, even after my correction.
After uploading the files below, I double checked to make sure that Percussion 4 is still on channel 8 in the …test 3.dorico file.
I don’t know how Percussion 4 got shifted to channel 1. I’ve been checking and double and triple checking as I go along. At some point, I must have put in the wrong channel.
In my main project, which I started from this morning then saved into my test project before deleting all of the flows but the first, Percussion 4 is on channel 8. So, whatever happened, happened this morning.
Whatever happened is not really important. I saw two instruments routed to the same midi channel and I was able to duplicated your problem. When I changed one of the channels to one that was still available, recreated the endpoints, then the problem went away.
So look for instruments routed to the same mid channel,
Thank you. I found a cymbal held by a synthesizer player with the same endpoint as Percussion 4. I changed to another open channel with the same library and applying my Playback Template now works. So, I’ve learned a couple of things.
One: Select a flow that has all of the instruments. Of all of my flows, only the first one, which is not in my musical but is there for testing, has every single instrument.
Two: If a note is selected in a flow other than the one you want, the flow picker above the Track Inspector and VST and MIDI tabs will be grayed out. Also, if a note is selected, going to Setup mode and selecting a flow will not set the flow in the flow picker in Play mode. Clicking to deselect all notes will allow the flow selection to work whether it is done is Setup Mode or in Play Mode. When I was checking ARIA instances and channels in my main project, I may not have noticed what flow I was in and that not all of the instruments were showing because of the flow that was selected. And then I didn’t do a complete check of all instruments in my test file where I deleted all flows but the first one.
Three: Check all of the instrument endpoints in the track inspector, VST instance and channel.
More practically, create your Endpoints on dummy scores containing only the instruments you want to cover for that Endpoint. Then aggregate those into Playback Templates to use for your live projects.
