Player duplication when importing multiple XML files Into flows

Hello All

I’ve got a suite of 11 pieces for a small ensemble (2 voices, guitar, and bass) I did in Finale, and am interested in putting them all into a single Dorico project as a series of 11 flows. I’m excited about this new (to me) way of organizing multi-movement works that Dorico offers.

So I imported the first piece of the suite and got it all set up and tidied, and had hoped from there I could just import the remaining 10 XMLs into that template. But so far it isn’t working, as even though I select “Merge with Existing Players Where Possible” I end up with new Players/Layouts. I assume that this is mainly a “file naming” kind of issue, as I likely changed something in Dorico so that it doesn’t read the XML parts/players as the same, and thus creates new ones. If that’s the case, fair enough. But how to fix it?

So my question is: is there a way I can copy the newly duplicated player/layout from the imported XML (the second piece) into the player/layout I formatted in for the first piece? For example, I just need one “Voice 1” player/layout across the 11 pieces, but I’ve now got one for each piece. I’ve attached the file so you can see what I mean.

I realize in retrospect that if I had imported all of the 11 XML files to start that I likely wouldn’t be having this problem, but my thinking at the time was to deal with all the conversion issues with just one piece, then bring the others into the project.

Thanks so much for your help.

Ok, I think I figured something out - by selecting “Include player in all flows” I can see all of the players. From there I can copy and paste the notes into the players I want, then delete the newly-imported players.

This will be a labour-intensive process, but will do the trick and won’t take too long. Curious if anyone knows a simpler way to get the same outcome.

I’ve encountered something similar last week: 24 flows of piano solo music that became 24 players.
I solved this by adding a new piano player to all flows, then flow by flow cut-paste music into the new player. Then I removed all other empty players.

No need to do that. Just add your first Piano Player to all other flows! (then do the cut/paste)

Hi @pjohnst2, I tried applying Reset Instrument Names (from menu Play): Dorico resets so to the presumably original instruments names at time of import, that you later changed, as you say (flute becomes voice and so on). The result is that the only common instrument/player, after importing is the bass, so that Dorico correctly creates new Players for the new incoming instruments.

What I can deduce from your example is that you don’t want the flute, marimba etc, but instead voice 1, voice 2 etc… One possible strategy is to make sure that in your original Finale files the various staves have consistently the same instrument designation applied to them (instrument type and its name), so that Dorico can merge them as you desire. (sorry, I don’t have Finale and don’t know if my terminology/worflow is correct/doable. And I hope I don’t am totally wrong with my deduction).

Sorry … I forgot to mention that Photoscore, even after setting the two staves to Piano, exports an XML that Dorico recognises sometimes as a single piano and sometimes as two players.
In that way I was sure I could get back to square 1 ready to move forward.

I think that PhotoScore will always produce 2 single stave pianos(?). So my first step is to change that instrument to a Piano 2-stave, move Piano 2 into Piano 1 (Bass staff) and delete Piano 2. Then for each additional flow, all I need do is add that Piano 1 to it, move the two new staves (created as Pianos 3 and 4) up and delete the players. (rinse and repeat).

It’s part of my PhotoScore ritual now!

Thanks, that makes sense. I did make some changes to the voices in Dorico - specifically, changing the sounds of the voice as I prefer the midi instrument sounds to the midi voices - so you are likely correct that this change confused the import of the MusXML files. In hindsight I should have pulled all the pieces in at once and then worked from there, but of now I can follow these workarounds and get there eventually. Thank you!

Thanks all, this makes sense as a good workaround for me.
