Please, fix Midi ports auto connect

There is this “feature” that keeps bugging me since I use Dorico (v2): every single time a usb midi device is connected, Dorico activate it without asking: it”s acting like it’s the only midi soft in a system. That’s very irritating. I never ever want a software to grab my device if I don’t ask. Could this be fixed now we are on v6? Moreover for Windows users wich makes this auto-connect “feature” a serious bug.

Try this:

  • connect all your USB MIDI devices to your computer.
  • launch Dorico.
  • from Preferences>Play>MIDI Input Devices deactivate the ones that you don’t want to use with Dorico.
  • close Dorico.

Next time you launch Dorico, the deactivated MIDI devices will stay deactivated, even if connected to your computer.

It’s just a work around and still an annoying one for a large and evolving setup. I would like that behaviour to finally be corrected.

How many MIDI devices do you add each week to your setup? I am genuinely curious what you mean with “a large and evolving setup”.

I think there would be many more people that would then ask: “why my MIDI keyboard doesn’t work?”, "why Dorico doesn’t activate my connected MIDI device automatically?

My regular setup has more than 40 midi ports (edit: 56ports) that are not concerned by this problem since they are always connected. Around that, I have about 30 devices that I connect for short period such as keyboard controllers, desktops synths, hardware synths dedicated for live setup but edited in the studio. (firmware updates, editing configuration, etc…) And then new gear that is always added.

I never connect them all at once and the last thing I want is to have to close a busy Dorico session so I can edit/update a unit

Dorico is aimed at professionals: one has to learn how midi works somehow in his life! After all, if one can learn how to write a score and use template in Dorico, flicking a switch should not be a big challenge.

At least, Dorico should ask before taking control.
