Does it make a difference if you use the “Piano” instrument (from the Keyboards family) instead of the “Grand staff” instrument (from the Sketch family) which is what you’re using at present?
No. Same thing on both. In fact, today is the 1st time I tried with the grand staff just to see if it would make a difference. I’ve tried uninstalling, reinstalling, and my Mac Studio with m2 chip is up to date with Sequoia.
Could you try the following… First, shut down Dorico. Then, open /Users/robsstudio/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6/preferences.xml, find and edit this bit:
<splitPointPitch2>
<type>int</type>
<value>47</value>
</splitPointPitch2>
So that it instead says this:
<splitPointPitch2>
<type>(empty)</type>
<value/>
</splitPointPitch2>
Then save that, restart Dorico and try again.
That preferences folder is completely empty on my computer. I have searched all over my computer in case there was another preference folder for my user preferences. I’ve loaded up Dorico several times and changed preferences and saved and still nothing in the preferences folder.
By default some of those folders will be hidden on Mac. In the Finder, hit cmd-shift-G and then in the dialog paste in /Users/robsstudio/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6 . Then you should be able to find the preferences.xml file in there.
Found it, edited it like you said, and the split point works for the first time in my life. Thanks, you’re a genius. Why do you think that was messed up in my preferences file?
My guess is that either this is a value that’s been migrated from an older Dorico version, or that it’s something that was edited when importing a MIDI file. (The MIDI file preferences are shared to some extent with the preferences for real-time MIDI input.)
All I can say is Thankyou. The split point is now working like I always hoped it would. Now I have a more open mind about using all the other features of Dorico to edit my realtime input.
Thanks to Richard Lanyon, I got my split point working in Dorico. Somehow my preference setting for my split point was messed up. After I got that fixed I now have a comparable set of commands in Dorico that get the same results as Sibelius’s Re-notate Performance command. (For anyone interested.)
After a little noodle, I 1st get this in Dorico:
1st step after I get that: Hit my shortcut for Edit>change voice to up-stem voice 1, then it looks like this:
2nd step after I get that: Hit my shortcut for NoteEditing>Shorten to next note. Then it looks like this:
3rd step after I get that: Hit my shortcut for NoteEditing>Extend to next note (after making individual selections all at once). Then it looks like this:
4th step after I get that: Hit my shortcut for NoteEditing>Extend to end of selection. (After making individual selections). Then it looks like this:
It takes a hair longer than Sibelius, but it ends up the way I want it. Now I can finally just use Dorico. Yeah!!
Glad you have the split point problem sorted.
There are many different tools for manipulating notes within and between voices. Which ones to use will depend on your start and end points, but you will probably find it easiest to work with View>Note and rest colours>Voice colours … turned on.
