Please make the effects windows floating

It’s a bit frustrating not being able to adjust the effects levels during playback and being able to stop and start playback at the same time.

From what I’ve read in this thread

this is the reason to why it doesn’t work.

I don’t understand why you didn’t implement the same behavior since you’ve had many many years with Cubase?

How do you Dorico expert users solve this?

Dorico and the audio engine run as two separate processes, and the audio engine is responsible for managing the windows for plug-ins. There are trade-offs and compromises involved in every technical solution to a set of requirements, and one of the less good things about the way Dorico and the audio engine interoperate is that plug-in windows are invisible to Dorico, and can’t be interspersed (or placed in front of or behind at will) with its own windows.

The way to manage this is to have multiple displays if possible, and have the window on separate displays. I don’t personally have multiple displays, so what I do is reduce the size of my Dorico project window a little so there is some room to one side where I can leave the plug-in windows, and then I click on them to bring them to the front when needed.

There must be some benefits then?

I use to do that when checking the settings in VIs, but that’s just because I want to be able to see what’s happening there, not for editing.

If you have a Stream Deck with the Notation Express templates, you can stop and start Dorico playback regardless of which app is in front.

Thanks, Michael! I’ll check it out.

When searching with Google these pages were at the top but they may not be trusted according to Norton, especially notationcentral.

This one seems okay though. Only for Sibelius as it seems, but I’ll keep searching.

On a Mac, I just activate “Mission Control” with a four-finger upward gesture on my Trackpad. This displays every app’s windows separately, without overlap, and I can then select the VST Engine’s windows with one click.

Is Norton still a thing…? :scream:

Notation Central is the vendor that makes and sells it. This is the correct link:

Interesting. I’m on Windows though.

Yeah, haha, Norton still seems to be around.
But I wouldn’t have it if it wasn’t for my woman’s father who has an account for several users. It came “in the bargain” so to say.

The notationcentral.com is the same adress though. I dared clicking the link on Google, it must be the same. So Norton seems to be wrong about this one.

This only works for me if Dorico and any plugins are reduced in size to fit on the same screen and Dorico is the front screen. As soon as I bring a plugin to the front the Stream Deck screen loses its Dorico template and all Dorico control is lost until I return it as the front screen. Do you have any suggestions re how I might get it to work as outlined here?

(I am using Dorico 5.1.7 and Elgato Stream Deck 6.7.3 on a 14" MacBook Pro with M3 processor and Mac OS 15.1.1 and an original 15-button Stream Deck)

Yeah, it is probably because you chose the option in the Stream Deck software settings to have it automatically load the profile depending on what application is in the foreground. You’ve likely configured it for nothing if Dorico is not in the foreground and the Dorico profile if Dorico is in the foreground.

You can stop it from doing this temporarily if you start the Stream Deck app by double clicking on the Stream Deck icon in the system tray so that the Stream Deck window is open (where you configure the buttons). If the Stream Deck config window is open, it will be prohibited from detecting the foreground application and automatically changing profiles based on the foreground application (at least in Windows).

I wanted the automatic application switching for most cases, so I set it up for the application-based profile switching, but I do this and start the Stream Deck app so that it opens as a window if I want to keep the Dorico profile up on purpose while I’m in other apps.

Thanks for your very prompt response! I’m trying to set my Dorico 5 profile as the default and if I understand you correctly, this should resolve my problem. However, at least so far I have been unable to get what I want with the Stream Deck configuration controls but will check on the Elgato website and Youtube.

It might yes, but if you don’t want to set the Dorico profile as the default, you can always leave this window open behind everything else to prevent it from auto-switching based on the application:

As long as that window is open, even if it is not in front, it won’t change profiles unless you choose a different profile from that drop-down list in the interface.

Thanks again—yes, I have it working like a charm!
