I’d suspect that intentional Discards are rare (I have used them). It would be good if there was “Confirmation Yes No” dialogue to save us from finger trouble.
A similar scary button lurks at the bottom of the Preferences dialogue.
For obvious reasons (‘blind terror and fear’) I don’t even know if there is “Confirmation Yes No” dialogue behind that button. Today I’m ultra cautious on that dialogue page and always close it the instant it’s remotely possible! The idea of losing all my smart customizations is terrifying. (Finale had reset button - and as Finale eventually would “wear out” and stop auditioning playback until you did a factory reset I know exactly how it feels to lose all the customisations).
Speaking from my own personal perspective: please no. I discard projects without saving them all the time. That could be sketch files, downloaded projects from the forum, or my own projects in which I wanted to experiment with something that I didn’t want to keep. Few things annoy me more than neverending dialogues asking me “are you sure?”. If I do discard a project by mistake, there’s always the auto-save file. Just my 2 cents.
“Close without saving” is pretty standard UI. I’d find it annoying to have Dorico ask me “Are you sure?”
Better solution there is to reflexively Cmd-S every very minutes…
I don’t like “Reset to Defaults.” With the Library manager now, that allows us to reset individual settings or categories, the button there feels unnecessary. And as you say, it kills everything.
I wouldn’t mind the discard button being on the left side of the dialogue and the save/cancel on the right, but I don’t think a confirmation is needed.
I too have been confused by the scope of the various reset to default buttons in different dialogues. Precisely what is being reset?
Get into the habit of pressing Return instead of pressing S. Dorico will activate the highlighted button. Then you can discard with Right Arrow, Return.
Frankly, in many years since the first Dorico 1, I never had the minimum accident. Simply because I never exit before saving, if I want to; while I almost always press discard if I exit without saving.
For me it’s perfect as it is.
