Plugins, DOP, other processing - Features Request

Direct Offline Processing:

  • More banks and “slots” in favorites section. Maybe keep the width (?) and just extend downward.
  • Make it possible to reorder slots in favorites section. Right now, deleting a slot in the window makes later ones “ripple”. Instead, leave them in place and let us move them manually using regular drag-and-drop.
  • Save favorites as preset. This could actually be pretty great. There have been times where I’ve worked on several series at the same time, for weeks, and the favorites banks and slots fill up quickly. By being able to save a preset of favorites it would be possible to save per-”job”. It would be much easier to manage multiple jobs not to mention it would be possible to reuse sets later on.
  • Display a batch-process name somewhere. It would be a bonus if it was possible to select an event and the name of the applied process was listed somewhere.
  • Display favorites banks and slots also elsewhere, outside of DOP window. Once we have set our favorites and labeled them it would make sense to maybe make them available outside of the DOP window, maybe in the right pane. This would also give more real-estate for more banks and slots if needed. Of course this would not be ideal in terms of hosting the plugins used but at least for fast recall this might be useful. Right now leaving the DOP window open while editing is actually a bit of a pain because it slows down the GUI when selecting new events, because the DOP now has to “fetch” the processing and load up the plugin. This means some of us keep opening and closing the window to deal with. By having the processes only, no plugins, on the right, it would possibly speed things up quite a bit.
  • Drag-and-drop from DOP to plugin. The reverse of what is possible now. There have been situations where I want to go back to using a process in realtime as an insert instead of offline, and right now I don’t think there’s a way to do it that’s as easy as it is to drag the plugin into the DOP window. It would basically just function as a copy-paste of settings from DOP to plugin. Either that or allow copy-paste between DOP and inserts.

Event effects. A plugin works on an event in realtime. Like youknowwhat does.

PLE & Macros panel in the right pane. Let us have “soft keys” in the right pane on which we can place saved PLEs and Macros, in banks (to multiply the number we can have). Since we can still have more PLEs and macros than we have space for soft keys add a search bar to find items. Simply typing into the search bar would start listing the results. I don’t think it would be necessary to provide the actual functionality of creating PLEs and macros there, just triggering them, similarly to triggering DOP in this pane (maybe combine DOP, PLE and macros vertically in the right pane). This would allow for more functions being easily available and found more quickly, and we won’t have to assign key commands to them. See “soundflow deck” in Pro Tools as an example.

Plugin - Post filter: Add more fundamental bands. Sometimes it is faster to use this plugin to cut out a single frequency whine than to do it any other way, but sometimes there’s also more than one frequency and they all aren’t a harmonic series. Having maybe 4 fundamentals with overtones would be great.

Plugin - Compressor: Add a range function. I use a 3rd party plugin for this. The range limits the amount (in dB) of compression the compressor can perform. Let’s say the signal above the threshold is reduced to half the input, so a signal that is 3dB above outputs to 1.5, 6dB above to 3dB, and 12dB above to 6dB. If you set the “range” function to maximum 3dB the compression amount will scale with input up to 3dB so at 12dB the output will be 9dB because the maximum compression amount is 3dB (12-3=9). Great for avoiding cases where very large peaks get compressed so much that we can hear the sound get “crushed”.

“AI” voice cloning. It would let us clone a voice and then apply that to new dialog. Great to solve “SmartPhone ADR”, tricky dialog edits and more. Currently we have to roundtrip between Nuendo and Adobe, Replay or other software, and of course our clients are slowly starting to incorporate this at the edit stage.

New multi-track tracks. Summing folder tracks or folder group tracks. Whatever you want to call it. People want it. I would use them. Other DAWs have them.

Multi-mono plugins in multichannel paths.

Macros: Add “pause” command. This allows processes time to execute before proceeding to the next command line. Maybe 2-3 options of say 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 seconds. Right now there are times where one process triggers before an earlier one has finished. Not all the time, but sometimes.

These suggestions are on point, and almost every one hits the pain points I encounter in my daily use of Nuendo: multi-mono plugins in multichannel paths, new “summing/multi-track” tracks (similar to Routing Folder/Summing Folder), hosting PLE and Macros in the right-side panel, event real-time effects, and the efficiency of Direct Offline Processing (DOP). The scenarios you mentioned are very practical
