I need a little help. I have a bass-line where I want the bass to make a portamento between 2 notes. How do I do that? I will guess it is a playing techic, and that I can choose between gliss and port.
Next:
I got some strings I want to fade more than it sounds (using MIDI keyboard).
Do I need to insert several volum changes over, like 2 messures, or is there an easy way to get dorico do get at startpoint and an endpoint and fade between (or increase), Otherwise I will need to put in several CC7.
Shift-O, gliss should do the job.
And you can be more precise on the last dynamic of a dim. You could use the “to niente” property if needed. In general, I’d avoid modifying CC7. CC1 and CC11 should be what you tweak in your score, leave CC7 for the mixing stage.
There is a difference between gliss and portomento. Gliss plays all the tones between, but I want the elbass to glide for 1 octave, not to get something like a rumbling bass But I can maybe adjust that in the preferences?
Can you explain me more about CC1 and CC11?
You can change the notation between gliss and portamento in the properties, but if your problem is a playback one, I will leave that to a more experience user in that bass field Note that there are different options in the properties (delay, etc.)
As for the CC1 and CC11 (volume and expression) they’re designed to be the most realistic ways to control dynamics for such instruments as strings, woodwinds or brass… You can set the way the dynamics are controlled through the expression map used. When you select a playback technique (say, Natural), you’ll see that on the right of the expression map editor, you can choose how the dynamics are rendered : velocity, cc. You can mix those, or use one or two cc. The most used solution (among the main sample companies) is a mix of CC11 (expression) and CC1 (volume). Note that CC1 and CC7 are not the same. CC7 is really the fader value and does not affect the instrument timbre. I don’t want to go further into explanations, since it might vary from one sample library to another, and you’ll need to read their user guide to have accurate information.
Hope it helps!
Interesting discussion! Achieving smooth portamento and gradual volume changes over multiple measures can be tricky. Looking forward to insights on best practices and techniques to handle this effectively in Steinberg’s environment!
