Can anyone shed some light to what these commands are meant to do?
I have searched this forum and Google “position in flow”, there is 1 result and that is a coincidence and not related to these commands… I also downloaded the PDF manual and searched it for the term. “Position in Flow” phrase does not exist in the manual.
THESE:
Other commands to start playback are also in the menu but not “Position in Flow”:
I assigned temporary keyboard shortcuts to both “Position in Flow” commands- move playhead & start/stop playback.
I have seen no effect using those. The playhead does not move and the playback always starts where the playhead previously was.
Start/stop playback (Position in Flow) is also accessible in Jump bar.
Any info about these commands is appreciated.
The reason I started to dig in possible playback shortcuts is to check if there would be something to start playback in Galley view from the left side of music that is currently visible. “Position in Flow” sounded promising. Just one click and playback starts from left edge. No mouse selection needed, only a keyboard shortcut- one push: play.
Now that I think of it, it might also be a subtle British humour- to welcome Finale migrants, having some ghost commands in app with no function behind them. Long-time Finale users would be used to those and feel comfortable right away.
But there is still hope! Someone at Dorico might see this thread and guide me to the source of information about those commands.
Try: ⌘D for Deselect All, any arrow key, and P for Play from Selection.

Move Playhead to Position in Flow:
This is only available in Play mode (where you can manually move the Playhead). Select an object in the Flow and this will move the Playhead from wherever it is, to there.
Start or Stop Playback (Position in Flow):
This will start playback from wherever the Playhead is at. It will play the whole ensemble and not just whatever is selected.

For what it’s worth, I was surprised that there wasn’t a relevant reference to your search term but I realise there is only so much information that one (amazing) person can and should put in the manual.
From the manual:
- Start playback in one of the following ways:
- To play back from the earliest selected item, make a selection, then either press P, click Play From Selection [image] in the Transport window, or choose Play > Play From Selection.
Tip
To play back all instruments, select a single note.
To play back only a single staff, select multiple items on the staff.
To play back multiple staves, select items on multiple staves.
This does not affect which channels are soloed or muted in the Mixer.
- To continue playback from the playhead position, either press Space or Enter, click Play [image] in the mini transport, click Play From Playhead Position [image] in the Transport window, or choose Play > Play From Playhead Position.
- To move the playhead and start playback from its new position simultaneously, double-click the ruler at the top of the track overview or Key Editor at the required position.
- To play back from the last playback start position, press Shift-Space or choose Play > Play From Last Start Position. This works even if you have since deselected the item at that position.
- To play back from the start of the flow, press Shift-Alt/Opt-Space or choose Play > Play From Start of Flow.
- To play back from the start of the project, choose Play > Play From Start of Project.
Thank you for your an
Wow, thanks. Although this is 3 keystrokes instead of 1, I can still reduce this sequence to 1 keystroke with Keyboard Maestro. Will try that as a workaround for now.
The point is- while working, if one needs to start playback hundreds of times then all those extra clicks are a burden. One click becomes 500…
Thanks. I was really hoping to find some command that will start playback with one keystroke from the place that is visible on the left side of the screen. This isn’t the command but @Mark_Johnson gave one workaround, which I am going to test.
Thank you again @DanielMuzMurray and @Mark_Johnson for your answers. I came up with 5-keystroke KeyboardMaestro macro, which I also attach here.
Will post this macro to FB group because there are others like me that miss the one-keystroke possibility to start playback from left edge of screen.
Start playback from left edge of visible music.kmmacros.zip (2.7 KB)
This workaround is good enough and saves me time.
