Positioning a rest

Hello. I need to enter an eighth note rest and Dorico has entered it under the staff. How do I “reposition” that rest so it is in the middle of the G clef lines in the Music ?

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Barney

Select the rest, open Properties (the lower zone), adjust the value in Rest pos.

Dear Steve Jones,

I am new to Dorico. I see the rest selection area but I don’t know what you mean by “properties” and lower zone. I looked at a tutorial but it didn’t help me.
I’m just trying to put an eighth note rest into a place where it should be in the Music. If you can tell me something I can follow I’d appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Barney

If you’re just entering music in a single voice, then Dorico should put the rest in the right place. Can you post a screenshot so we can see what’s going on? Or even a copy of your project?

Hi Barney,

To open the lower zone, either:
In the Window menu, choose Show Lower Zone, or use the keyboard shortcut which is shown there (cmd-8 if you are on Mac, ctrl-8 if you are on Windows). The categories of Properties displayed will be relevant to which type of notational element is selected in the project. If the rest is selected, there will be a category called Notes and Rests. In that, there will be a Property caled Rest pos. Click on its button (which will turn blue) and then change the value (at the right) of “Rest pos.”. The rest will move up or down, depending on the value you enter.

Steven.

I don’t know how to post a screenshot, but perhaps I can tell you what’s up…(?)

In voice #2 I am trying to put in an eighth note rest . The rest shows up as a “shadow” on the Music but does not go onto the Music “permanently” in black when I click the mouse onto it.

I tried holding down “shift” and then clicking the mouse but it didn’t work…

Any ideas ?

If you’re inputting music in multiple voices, then it’s normal (and correct) for rests to be higher or lower when there is a note in the other voice.

Note also that in Dorico you don’t generally need to “enter” rests – just move to the next position where you want a note and enter the note, and Dorico will fill in the rests.

To post a screenshot, just paste it into the edit box where you type your reply. (I see that you’ve been posting by email, and I’m not sure if attachments work there – you may need to visit the forum in your browser.)

Sorry @Barney_Griffin, is the issue that a rest isn’t being created at all when you click the mouse, or that the created rest isn’t at the same vertical position as the shadow rest?

If it’s #2, follow @StevenJones01’s advice. If it’s #1, can you please go into more detail about your procedure leading up to the shadow note?

Thanks… this is very frustrating … Dorico operates quite a bit differently than Finale. I spent 2 hours trying to write a multi voice guitar MEASURE, which would have taken 20 seconds on Finale.
I had to stop using Finale because Finale kept crashing on me and the company (as you probably know) went out of business.

Just paste what into the edit box ?..and what’s the edit box ? … I can attach things but I’ve never taken a screen shot.

Yes! The best advice I can give is not to try to work in Dorico the way you did in Finale – learn the way this program works. It may be slow going at first, but you’ll pick up speed as you go.

You’ve been responding to this thread by email. If you want to attach images and such, you need to do it on the website, where you started the thread. Here is the link: Positioning a rest

When you go there, you’ll see a Reply button after each post, and one at the bottom of the page. When you click one of those, you’ll see an edit box just like there was when you started the thread, like this:

If you don’t know how to take a screenshot, then maybe you can just upload your Dorico project file so we can take a look at what’s going on. You can do that by dragging it from your computer into the edit box, or by clicking the upload button in the toolbar:

I’d advise checking this out:

Thanks for advising to check out the “First Steps” guide, but I don’t have the patience to wade through a bunch of things that have nothing to do with the single thing I’m trying to do.

I DID find the paragraphs section you were mentioning, but I’m just trying to type in words like “verse” and “bridge” etc. where they are supposed to be in the Music…
Can you tell me how that is done ?

thanks in advance for any help…

Barney

One of the advantages of reading forum posts on the website instead of via email is that it’s easier to see which thread you’re responding to.

This question doesn’t belong in this thread; it belongs in the other one you started. And it was already answered by @Janus.

This is very short-sighted, and a discourtesy to those of trying to manage your frustration.

It’ll be well worth your time to do it. Tasks that were simple in Finale are typically simple in Dorico. You will soon have spent more time explaining what you need help with here on the forum then what it would take to get through the entire First Steps guide. This time would have gotten you quite a ways into the First Steps guide.

In your case, one of the advantages of at least having a little read through this guide would be to help you describe your dilemmas a bit more efficiently e.g. Properties/Zones are actually mentioned on the very first page of the First Steps guide.

Anyway, @Barney_Griffin, have you found a solution to your query yet? If not, what can we do to help next?
