Possible bug arising during condensing

These extra a2 labels suddenly started to appear. Any ideas as to what is causing this.

It’s not a bug.
What does the Condensing Change do? And what are your global default settings?
Condensing takes place based on phrases. Each rest ends a phrase.

Please watch this video

I politely beg to differ: it is a bug, especially when you have 6 or 7 redundant a 2’s on one line interrupted only by eighth rests.

The work-around is easy, just annoying.

No. It is the intended behaviour for the current condensing algorithm.
But the team knows it is unwelcome in passages like the one above. So I’d guess there will be some changes.

Ergo, a bug.

No. This behaviour shows the algorithm is working as expected. It looks at a phrase, delineated by rests, and condenses each according to the chosen condensing options. You are wanting an enhancement - for the algorithm to consider multiple adjacent phrases and make some different choices.

@rkrentzman,

If you can upload some sort of a project then we can probably figure out if there are any strange settings that can be changed to solve your problem.

It’s definitely not a bug (though just as annoying!)

This is what I get with the default settings:

I get the multiple a 2 (like in your screenshot) if I manually force a one-voice condensing. A condensing reset for these two instruments at the start of the passage could be sufficient to solve your issue. But as @DanielMuzMurray is saying, it will be easier to help you if you share a project!

As mentioned before, I know how to fix it. In a large score, it can be quite time-consuming, especially when this occurs near the beginning.

But my contention is that this should never happen, no matter what the setting.

Would it make everyone feel better if we just called this an unintended consequence?

I feel very well! I was just trying to help @John_McWilliam
Maybe I replied to you instead, in which case it was unintentional.

This meta-discussion comes up frequently. My $0.02: On the software side, a bug is something which is not working as designed. A defect (or issue) is something which is working as designed but which gives unsatisfactory results – the design has shortcomings, rather than the implementation.

If I want to hang a picture on the wall and I put the nail in the wrong place, that’s a bug. If I put the nail right where I meant to, but then I don’t like the way the picture looks, that’s a defect.

I have watched the video which towards the end did adress this problem, particularly the importance of rests in defining the condensing regions. It still does not offer an answer to my problem. In the above screenshot the first line of music is condensed according to my wishes. In the second line the extra labels appear and in the third line we are back to normal again. I have checked for differences between Cl 1 & 2 but cannot find any. I can send you a snipped if you think this would help.

It always helps, especially with condensing issues.

You have a Condensing Change beginning in measure 26, and that’s where your problems begin. Have a look there first or just reset or delete it and see what happens.

It would be helpful to know if that condensing change is for the clarinets or another instrument. If it is for the clarinets, why did you feel it necessary?

That particular condensing change was unnecessary so I deleted it, however, the extra a2 labels are still there.

It is a little hard to see, but in mm 20 and 30, there appears to be just a single instrument playing, hence the ‘1.’. So condensing isn’t involved in the top and bottom systems. I understand that doesn’t help you, but wanted to clarify why they appear correct.

Please!

@rkrentzman, I got my users mixed up when I suggested sending a project - apologies

I have found that I can hide the extra labels in Properties and intend to compromise with that option. I am, therefore, closing this thread now.
