I try to clarify further: both L and M frames are Music Frame Chains:
if you create the Music Frame Chain directly into the music area (“into the layout” instead of editing the page template) in Engrave mode, it will be created as a L (“Layout”) type music frame chain: this tells you that the music frame chain was created outside the page template directly into the layout, and this creates a page override (if you remove the page override, also your L frame is gone), and L type music frame chains cannot display Flow Headings;
if you create instead the Music Frame Chain inside the Page template editor (this method is recommended), the music frame chain will be created as an M type: I think M is the remaining denomination of “Master” (in previous Dorico versions Page templates where called Master Pages): this tells you that that music frame chain was created inside the page template, doesn’t create overrides, and will show Flow headings

I appreciate you telling me about creating a Music Frame chain inside the Page template editor, because I had never heard of this possibility before. It makes sense, as editing a Page template would, of course, avoid overrides.
Unfortunately, I’m using Dorico 3.5, when - as you say - Page templates had not yet been instituted, and “Master Pages” were the method. I vaguely recall that making changes to, or creating new Master pages had to include the included Master Flow, etc, pages, as a “Set”. I will have to do some experiments with this, to see if it’s possible in 3.5.

(I only dimly recall something about having to include the default First, Default, Flow, etc. master pages along with any newly changed or created master pages. . . )
I published a book of traditional Hasidic melodies. Many of these songs don’t have names/lyrics, and so I created a musical index using multiple music frames for ease of reference.
Is “creating the Music Frame Chain inside the Page Template Editor” the same thing as modifying an existing page template, or does it normally involve creating a new/custom page template?
What I’m struggling to understand is this: if I edit a page template and change the MA frame chain so that it displays only Flow 1 (instead of All Flows), wouldn’t every page using that page template inherit that change?
If that’s the case, then wouldn’t one normally create a separate custom page template for this purpose, rather than modifying an existing one?
(And, if so, the subsequent question is for those who have used v3.5: Can one do this without necessarily having to create an entire new Master Page “set”?)
What is the problem with creating multiple Page Template Sets?
One can create blank documents (or a blank document) merely to store or create new Template Sets, export sets from them, and then draw on those sets whenever needed for a given project.
The problem, for me, isn’t creating multiple Page Template Sets. It is that I’m still trying to understand the proper definitions of flows, frame chains, page templates, and template sets, and the relationships between them.
But I am very grateful for the assistance that all of you continually offer. Hopefully, I’ll catch up one day!
Thank-you, Christian! It is very helpful, in that it describes where I was getting hung up – I didn’t realize that the only way to restrict the MA frame to a particular flow is via the Page frame editor!

Filtering the MA Music frame to only display flow 1 will affect any page whose template uses that music frame chain (so also the First page template for example), in the current project. Consider that the Full Score layout and the Parts layout use different Page Template sets (one for the full score, and one for all the parts)
It depends of what are you trying to achieve. Editing the filters on music frame chains is an advanced functionality. Possibly you can obtain what you need using other methods in setup mode. Can you describe what you are trying to do with a practical example?
