Preferences search?

It would just be nice. Digging around for a preference I know I had set and then lose all of my preferences or change something back that I wanted to try. Some of the categories make sense, some don’t.

Thanks

My guess and rumor is that it is on the “to do” list, and this has been mentioned many times.

They revised the Key Commands window. I can’t help but think a preferences revision is not too far off…including search.

Yes, that would be highly appreciated. I dedicated a separate document to try to declutter Steinbergs preference and preset system and where each file is stored. Still, there are preferences which are ambiguous with regard to how they are stored or reference to other files. This is reflected by many threads here in this forum, too.

The lists provided by Steinberg give a basic orientation but leave many questions unanswered. Basically, Steinberg offers an overview where presets are stored and a more comprehensive list about preferences and where they are stored.

To sum up, it would be of much help if there was a dedicated search function that reveals how and where all specific preferences and presets can be found. Not only for daily business but also for general backups, resets, transfers etc.

Indeed, and this is a well-known “serpent de mer”, living well hidden in the depths of the Steinberg Ocean.

Meanwhile, I use the PDF version of the Operation Manual with a rather good PDF-Reader search function (PDF-XChange Viewer, to not name it…), starting from page #1504. :expressionless_face:

Well, if only the Operation Manual would reveal the secrets of the serpent de mer. Sadly, more often than not it doesn’t and leaves me with these questions unanswered. Since Cubase is such a vast and complex system I understand that a Manual cannot possibly cover anything. That’s why I support the OP’s request in the first place.
To come back to your analogy with Steinberg’s ocean: The ocean is indeed the most uncharted place on earth, too

We can only assume and hope. Searching…for my exact topic title did not bring up much. It’s now here and anyone else wants to find it exactly by how it’s labeled in Cubase and chime in.

FWIW, coming from Reaper(and still use it), has many more preferences/settings and it’s no doubt needed there. You don’t even need to know the exact wording, and it will do something like an F3 search next, very quickly.
